Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - Thread Thirty-Five

Posted on 03/09/2006 10:08:04 PM PST by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Unrest in Pakistan Setback for Terror War
(Full Story)

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan -- A week of unprecedented urban fighting in the wild tribal belt of North Waziristan has left scores dead and forced thousands to flee their homes, raising the stakes in Pakistan's war on Islamic militancy along the Afghan border.

A jumbled alliance of foreign militants, local tribesmen and Islamic students eager for jihad have stepped up resistance in a region where the army already claims to have wiped out al-Qaida as a viable fighting force.

The unrest, brewing for months, is a setback to the U.S.-led war on terror. Further hampering that effort are deteriorating relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over Afghan claims that Taliban leader Mullah Omar is hiding in Pakistan and suicide bombers are training here.

Thank you both. That "Camp Jihada" info is kind of disturbing, especially in light of what we have seen in Oregon earlier. It appears that the Wolf is not outside the door, but in it.

"Pakistan Forces Kill 15 Near Afghan Border - North Waziristan , suspected Taliban sympathizers"
AP on Yahoo ^ | 3/24/06 | Bashirullah Khan - ap

Posted on 03/24/2006 1:30:43 PM PST by NormsRevenge

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "MIRAN SHAH, Pakistan - Pakistani security forces backed by helicopter gunships killed at least 15 suspected Taliban sympathizers Friday in the latest flare-up of violence near the Afghan border, the Pakistani army said.

One soldier also was killed.

The top army spokesman described the continuing bloodshed in the North Waziristan tribal region as "disturbing" and said efforts to control it were costing the Pakistani military "heavily."

"Eighty percent of the people in the area are sitting on the fence and watching for which side buckles, either the government or the militants, and they will go with the winner," Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan said.

Friday's clashes occurred near the region's main town, Miran Shah, about 195 miles southwest of the capital, Islamabad."

Grand Junction, CO - update
*****

Police have two people of interest in explosions

Several crude bombs exploded and two were disarmed this morning outside Grand Junction homes located across the county.

One of the residents targeted said all of the homes targeted belonged to employees of Serco, a subcontractor for the Federal Aviation Administration in Grand Junction.

Police have not made any arrests, but they are investigating two individuals they believe to be connected to the case.

As of 1 p.m., police said they had two “people of interest.”

Police have established a command center for the bomb investigation at the Grand Junction Police Department, 625 Ute Ave.

Interim Police Chief Bill Gardner crossed his fingers as he said, “It’s very possible we can have this case solved today.”

He added, however, “This is a legitimate public safety threat. We want everybody to be vigilant.”

(snip)

Tim Ricciardi, who lives at 2344 1/2 Rattlesnake, said all of the homes that were targeted were residences of employees of Serco.

Ricciardi declined to give a name, but he said he suspects one of the culprits is a man who made threats to co-workers last year after being fired from his job.

He added he doesn’t think the bombs were intended to hurt anyone because of where they were placed. At his home, the bomb was placed and exploded under his pickup in his driveway

Well, chlorine should have been in the pool, what kept contaminants out?

In our younger days we always looked forward to using the pools and jacuzzis at the hotels/motels along the way. In recent years, we stay clear of them. Most are NOT well maintained (unless you carry a pH kit with you when you travel). Also, just about anyone can use those facilities and we can't be sure about their personal hygiene or what someone else may have put into the water (bathroom challenged or toddler dirty diaper syndrome).

UPDATE on FALCON-1:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/4698736.stm

Last Updated: Friday, 24 March 2006, 22:57 GMT

"SpaceX rocket fails first flight"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The new Falcon 1 rocket has been lost on its maiden flight.

The US vehicle, developed by the Space Exploration Technologies Corp, was destroyed soon after take-off from the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

The vision of Elon Musk, co-founder of the electronic payment system PayPal, the Falcon was designed to cut the cost of current satellite launches.

An onboard camera appeared to show the rocket rolling out of control shortly before the video signal was lost.

SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corp) spokeswoman Gwynn Shotwell told reporters on a conference call that there was about a minute of powered flight.

"We do know that the vehicle did not succeed after that," she said. "Clearly this is a setback but we're in this for the long haul."

And Elon Musk added: "We had a successful lift-off and Falcon made it well clear of the launch pad, but unfortunately the vehicle was lost later in the first-stage burn. More information will be posted once we have had time to analyse the problem."

The vehicle left its launch pad on the Kwajalein Atoll at just after 2230 GMT. It was the fourth attempt at a flight; a number of technical issues had prompted SpaceX to delay the inaugural mission.

The rocket was attempting to carry a 19.5kg satellite to a low-Earth orbit of 450km.

The satellite, FalconSat-2, was built by US Air Force Academy cadets to investigate the phenomenon known as "space weather"."

Glad to know that I am not the only "phobic" who avoids hotel swimming pools, jacuzzis, and hot tubs. IMHO they are breeding grounds for all kinds of nasty stuff.

I also carry Lysol wet wipes to clean hotel toilet seats, shopping cart handles, public restroom door handles, etc.

Tip to all: when traveling, do not ever put your luggage on the floor in a hotel room. Use the rack provided. (usually there is one available) Even the best hotels are beginning to have problems with bed bugs. (another immigrant problem?) Those horrid little creatures would just love to hop a ride to your home, from the carpet to your luggage.

***OPINION 2: Sleeper cells and wannabes are most likely here/still here.***

Some will say there's no evidence they exist. The naysayers make movies, publish newspapers, operate TV channels and have staunch audiences that hinge on their every word. Too bad they've created a world "different" than the one the rest of us live in. I agree with you Cindy!
