Yup, knee-jerk conservatives acting like liberals. I feeeeeel that this is a bad deal. Don't bother trying to listen to the facts. Maybe we need affirmitive action on these port sales.

A committee in the house attached an ammendment to a budget bill that would prohibit any company with majority ownership by a foreign country that recognized the Taliban from 1996 to 2001 from running ports in our country.

There were only 3 countries that recognized the Taliban. They were Pakistan, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

After the 9/11 attack the UAE withdrew regnition of the Taliban and they aided us in tracking down members of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda.

In other words, the UAE has already done what they can to to make up for the mistake of recognizing the Taliban. The ammendment is being sold as a broad regulation that doesn't specificly target the UAE, but neither Saudi Arabia or Pakistan are major players in port operation, and the UAE has already withdrawn political recognition of the Taliban and helped in our efforts against them.

The mention of the Taliban in the ammendment is more of the same guilt by loose association and political rhetoric. This is another disguisting ploy by politicians to prey on the fears of the public that knows little about the facts of the case.

The UAE would be wise to divest itself from investments in a country where the government is going to change the laws to specificly ban them when they are working with us in the war on terror and they are apparently already going to pass the security review by the treasury department.

This stupidity is going to do significant harm our economy. It's going to put a lot of fear in the minds of a lot of foreign investors. It's going to cost a significant amount of Americans their jobs.

If there are real security issues, then the deal should be blocked on those grounds. However, that doesn't appear to be the case. Instead we have politicans playing short sighted political games with our economy. These morons need run out of office.

Re #127 - Does not Israel have a port or two that could possibly host a USN Fleet as well as Dubai?

Or would that "offend" our Islammic "Allies" too much to be acceptable?
Would they all turn on us if we tried it?

Just wondering.

What loss of air bases? Where has Dubai even hinted at such a thing happening? Geez. Is our military THAT dependent on a SINGLE air base? I have a hard time believing this.

How many American Security Guards would it have taken to secure the UAE owned ports had the deal went through?

REPLY:

The UAE would not have owned the ports.

The company DPW would merely have managed the cargo coming in and out of the port.

Yes I still resent anyone broad brushing Americans as ignorant.

If I want to hear that kind of bunk I will jump over to DU land.

Reid was just claiming they'll look at the devil in the details but does he have a warrant to look at company records being the sale is going to an "American" company.

LOL..I was just thinking the same thing..
It was a Rovian plot. Rove along with Fox News, Haliburton and willing talk radio hosts tried to create a smoke screen of disinformation so the deal would fall apart and there would be no choice but to move it to Haliburton.
Ha, Ha..

This is about the stupidest blunder I have ever seen by some of the most short-sighted fear-mongering politicians I have ever seen.

Does not Israel have a port or two that could possibly host a USN Fleet as well as Dubai?

Haifa comes to mind. But you have two ugly choices: a quick but dangerous transit through the Red Sea and Suez Canal (assuming Egypt decides to allow US warships to transit the canal in the first place), or a safer but slow transit around the Cape of Good Hope, through Gibraltar, and across the Mediterranean.

Or would that "offend" our Islammic "Allies" too much to be acceptable? Would they all turn on us if we tried it?

In all likelihood, they would probably do just that, especially after the way we crapped all over Dubai first.

Generally, it's never a good idea to go out of your way to do things to offend your allies.

Well, it seems there are a few who think we need to pay off our allies with sweet (and apparently uncontested) business deals. Gee, America for sale,,just pretend to be a friend and we'll hold the door open for ya.

Apparently, if the US doesn't pay off her allies, they will all become evil terrorist-supporting empires who are hellbent on our destruction. Give me a break. It may just possibly be in our allies 'best interest' to get a grip on terrorism within their own borders. We have to do it to. Dubai isn't going to shrivel up and hyper react over this. I know, some here will be greatly disappointed if it is treated only like the business deal DPW presents it as. Are there any cool heads in the house?

Worth repeating, this is a step BACKWARDS in diplomacy. The UAE was an ally and this is now an embarassment to the administration and the American people. The port secuity HAS NOT CHANGED.

"This stupidity is going to do significant harm our economy."

Which shows how far down-hill the United States has slid if it's so dependent upon foreign investment to maintain it's economy. The kind of thing that no doubt has the Founding Fathers and Abraham Lincoln spinning in their graves with disgust and rage at 3000rpm.
