Well, what I can't figure out is what the HECK is with Dubai.
They are trying to be a mecca of industry and capitalism over there and this was just one more brick in the wall to them...but from an advertising standpoint, they got their money's worth.

Yes it is. This flap (and DPW's new solution) won't be good for business, for our economic interests or national security. Congress has brought shame upon our nation for short term political gains.

Take advantage of being stupid, fat and happy now because it ain't gonna last. The chickens are coming home to roost and there going to be laying nothing but big fat turds on your hopes for a more secure America. Thsi was the height of short sighted reactionism ans it will come back to bite us in the a$$. It's just a question of when.

Howlin so good to see you. I have been missing your words of reasoning the last few days as everyone has been overjoyed that Bush and bushbots are getting whats coming to them

I hope Commander, Fifth Fleet has some suitably sailor-like language for expressing his opinion of Congress, now that his ships have to go to Diego Garcia or Guam for maintenance and R&R. I don't see this happening. The Fifth Fleet is a shield for Dubai vis a vis Iran.

The only way ANY company, American or not, will buy into this is if they can turn a profit for their shareholders. Maybe, maybe not. While I don't doubt the profitability of DPW, please keep in mind that this is a State-Owned Entity...and such entities don't often have as much concern over the profit issue as you're asserting. Indeed, they may have entirely different, national priorities held foremost.

Bill Clinton helped Dubai on ports deal
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1588266/posts Financial Times (FT.com) ^ | March 1 2006 23:50 | Stephanie Kirchgaessner
Bill Clinton, former US president, advised top officials from Dubai two weeks ago
on how to address growing US concerns over the acquisition of five US container terminals by DP World.
It came even as his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton, was leading efforts to derail the deal.

"Really? Didn't some in the UAE meet with Bin Ladin? hmm seems like some good intel to me. Also they know things about Iran" Are you justifying Dubai withholding intel because of a business deal gone wrong? If they aid the enemy they become the enemy and will be treated as such. I don't think they are willing to give up their kingdom over a port deal. They not only would lose face but a little ass too.
To: bayourant; Howlin
Don't worry - this morning, DWP bought another American company and now that "American company" is going to take over the P&O terminals - big deal.

THE CLERK: THE SENATOR FROM NEW YORK, MR. SCHUMER, PROPOSES AMENDMENT NUMBER 2959 TO THE WYDEN AMENDMENT, NUMBER 2944. AT THE END OF THE AMENDMENT, ADD THE FOLLOWING: IN THE INTEREST OF NATIONAL SECURITY, EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, NOTWITHSTANDING ANY OTHER PROVISION OF LAW AND ANY PRIOR ACTION OR DECISION BY OR ON BEHALF OF THE PRESIDENT, NO COMPANY WHOLLY OWNED OR CONTROLLED BY ANY FOREIGN GOVERNMENT THAT RECOGNIZED THE TALIBAN AT A LEGITIMATE GOVERNMENT OF AFGHANISTAN DURING THE TALIBAN'S RULE BETWEEN 1996 THROUGH 2001 MAY OWN, LEASE, OPERATE OR MANAGE REAL PROPERTY OR FACILITIES AT A UNITED STATES PORT.
That's seems fair to most Americans. You cannot kill us with impunity, and then expect all the financial rewards of being a good neighbor to apply to you after being responsible of assisting one of the most repressive regimes in world history.

The Muslim world has been insulting the West for centuries.
They were insulting us and our values even before their marauding hordes conquered the Anatolian peninsula, Asia Minor, the Balkans and plunged into what is now known as the West.
We have to stop thinking so much about which Muslim-Arab potentate we've slighted and start thinking about why so many American interests are entangled in the fickle feelings of these people.

The net result of this Congressional posturing will be a reduction of investment in this country by foreign companies.
Congratulations, Congress, you've acted like the legislature of Argentina or Bolivia.
Scapegoating foreigners -- particularly ones from a country that supports our efforts in the Middle East -- for no reason is not a healthy sign for any country, particularly ours.
To: newzjunkey
so not allowing a UAE state owned company to operate these ports, is going to cost us another 9/11? that's your argument?
would you deny anything to the UAE based on that logic? suppose the UAE wanted to buy the world trade center from Silverstein, would you sell it to them? Would you sell Lockheed Martin to the UAE, based on the same analysis that says "if we do anything to make the UAE mad, that will lead to another 9/11". if that's true, then we might as well fold up this country right now - if we are going to allow what is essentially blackmail from an arab country to rule us.
To: navysealdad
I hope they sell them cheap to Red China just to demonstrate the motives of the opposition.

YES WE CAN!
1-The right thing has been done I believe. This is hopefully the beginning of a more secured America and thus better for business BUT... sorry, NOT EVERYTHING is for sale in America.
2- Security is very important to the American people after 9/11
3-The "Ball Game" of politics has changed and it appears politicians are getting it.
4-NEXT: Securing the border *** FIRST ****, Then we can tackle the actual immigration reforms and who to handle the people who are already here... LET'S START THE BALL ROLLING!!!!! :)
