In the 1960s and '70s they burned their bras and draft cards, marched on Washington, founded Earth Day and vowed never to trust anyone over the age of 30.
Today, the baby boomers are doing the limbo, dancing wildly and waving their arms in the air to the unintelligible lyrics of "Louie, Louie."
At least that's what they're doing in Portland, Oregon, at the Baby Boomers' Social Club Friday night dance at the Red Lion Hotel.
"We have a live band once a month, and we do all sorts of different dance styles," says Melanie Pedersen, co-founder with Julie Dahlman of the Baby Boomers' Social Club.
"Julie does a wall sweep," Pederson says. "She says, 'come on gals ... go get the guys that are holding up the walls.'"
"You know, we're in our 50s now, so it's okay to ask the guys to dance," Dahlman adds with a laugh.
Indeed, this mammoth generation -- at once lauded for its commitment to social change and derided for its perceived self-indulgence -- has grown up and is now going gray.
So, how did the "Me" generation do for itself? Have the boomers prospered as much as they could have, or did they miss key opportunities to better their nation and their lives?
It depends on whom you ask.
Some experts say the boomers did not plan well for their future, especially their financial futures, relying instead on the whimsy of a historically rosy economic era to carry them along.

*Perceived* self-indulgence?
PERCEIVED?
"In the 1960s and '70s they burned their bras and draft cards, marched on Washington, founded Earth Day and vowed never to trust anyone over the age of 30."
Bullshit. A loud and overbearing 10% or less did this crap, and was lovingly overcovered by the media that made its own lefty transition at that time.
According to Suze Orman Baby Boomers are Baby Bummers..
hmmm...Disagree big spenders of the 80's are gone, and many Boomers if anything might be spoiled. Most I know depend on there real property and inheritances more than pensions or savings accounts.
I'm 59.......... a boomer......... we suck............ look what we have allowed our government to become on our watch ............ a bunch of compromised, spineless, self-serving politicians who passed CFR without a blink, blew off the ports deal with little reason, spent our *sses off, overspend for lousy/socialist schools, won't clean up the income tax, won't deal with the social security problem, and won't put a number of traitors (Sandy Berger, etc.) among us in jail.
We suck.
;-)
So, what was the other 90% doing then???
Not ALL this generation did any of these things. It is the Gloria Steinem's and ilk like yer that want the new generations to believe it. I live in the mid-west and didn't know of drugs until the early 70's. I did not know anyone using them. And I was not isolated. This is a misnomer that is constantly perpetuated by the west coast, the Susie Orman's, etc. and east coast large liberal cities where I presume these things originated.

Wonder why so many of these Boomer bashing whine-fests start with lies. Earth Day was the brain child of Gaylord Nelson (born in 1916) and John McConnell (born in 1915). Nelson hired Denis Hayes (born 1944) to run the effort. Not a Boomer in the bunch.
And, the slogan "never trust anyone over thirty" was from a TV movie written by a guy born in 1928.
You kids really should do a little real-world homework, that is unless you enjoy being led by the nose.
We were busy trying to make sure we had enough Fritos in the house to get us through the amount of weed we had for the evening.
Agreed. The typical Boomer is doing just that.I thank God every day that my Dad passed on to me his Depression-era attitudes regarding work, saving, debt, conspicuous consumption and other things.
I will add that then along came the drug problems, drinking, and all the other categories changing how SS was distributed and the poor were taken care of. As the children became wise to the tax rip off they demanded their share too. Why should the person that works their life get less than the ones who don't. I believe this is the birth of the ME generation. Who do you know that does not try to disperse relatives property prior to putting them in a nursing home so they can keep the money? Not was I was raised to believe but a means to get what was given away to people who never purchased property. If you haven't got they can't take but if you work hard and get--they also take--these folks found a way around it.
So, what was the other 90% doing then???
Well I was listening to my 45's on my record player, eating fried Bologna Sandwiches and drinking Oarnge Crush dreaming about a guy who had longer hair than myself...LOL...
Exactly.
But these "youngsters" on FR sure do love to bash the Boomers, don't they?
HAHA..No Joke..
Boomers.
lol
Because either they're liberals or they are repeating the liberal lies.
I'm amazed at how ignorant some on here appear on this subject.
You could be correct in citing your 10% figure, but I must point out to you that it's the very *same* 10% that's been in effective control of the democRAT Party, and many other sources of corruption and decay in this country, for the last 20 years.
Apparently you need some new friends.
I won't take responsibility for that. I vote regularly and learn the most I can about the candidates, most are liars. I had no control over the S & L scandal for example and I just saw one of the Keating 5 on Fox this week touting his expertise. What expertise? He is a crook just like the rest--they cover for each other and I don't care how honest the start out--they end up doing what is best for their personal wealth.
