House Appropiations Committe voted to block Dubai deal
You forgot to add your beloved Coast Guard to the IN FAVOR list.
I'm behind her AND Harris in FL
If the Senate kicks the can down the road long enough, 45 days, then no law passed can be enforced retroactively. Even if a law is passed it probably could be challenged in court on some US International Trade laws that allow for the leases.
Perhaps to make a veto more problematic.
But, frankly, I don't care what tactics are used; the ports "deal" needs to be terminated.
"You forgot to add your beloved Coast Guard to the IN FAVOR list."
I don't mix the Coast Guard with politics.
I just do my "job" each and every week.
What do you do, outside of FR, and the GOP,
to actually help President Bush and America?
It shocked me too. They're so worried about Dubai they don't see what's happening under their own noses in our country.
My husband had the same reaction as you did, Starwise. I've been ignoring the news for the most part because it's so depressing. We don't seem to have that can do spirit anymore in this country. We may as well be France, imo.
Not since Newt have I seen such Cojones in the House. LOL
How is this 'good'?
That's right! Thank God the borders are safe! Oh wait.....ummm....never mind. This argument keeps popping up and it's one of the silliest of the pro-port deal crowd. Let's see if I've got the logic right. Our ports can be compromised even by people already in the country. So the obvious solution is to allow a company owned by a government that actively supports terrorists to have increased access to several of the major ports in order to make them safer?
LOL. Not to mention we must be paying a pretty penny to have our ships and other privileges there...so they ARE getting business from us.
The Dubai-ans I suspect are highly sophisticated in the matter of business. If this deal doesn't work out, they'll find another one. Also, a check of DPW's website shows they have controlling interests in ports all over the world, so U.S. would complete the "picture."
They'll find another way. Hundreds of thousands of acres of BLM land will be going up for sale soon. 'Twil be interesting to see who makes offers for those acres.
You know what I don't get? Why the president doesn't have a meeting with Congress about this. And press conferences to talk to Americans about the deal and calm the fears.
Because if this bill goes through, we're in really big trouble. I'm not in love with the port deal, but this bill is going to hurt us in ways Congress obviously hasn't thought about.
How about Arab countries which have cooperated with us in the WAT now telling us we can't use their country as staging areas? Gas prices going through the roof?
What I really resent is the 14 agencies in charge of the port deal and not ONE of them thought to give a heads up to the president before the official announcement to find a way to handle this from a PR standpoint? Because from where I sit, this is a lose lose in every regard no matter what happens now.
AND, we've ticked off the very people we need desperately as allies.
So Dubai is our good ally, and by this we're shafting a good friend.
Well frankly I neither trust Dubai so much as you seem to, no do I remember so much help they have been to us. I think that best that might be said about this deal is that "it's just the free market at work." It was for sale and they made the best offer. And that's the BEST -- The BEST that could be said. If it's true.
But I do have two questions for you...
[1] What about our {other} good friend, and ally -- the one in the Middle East who really has been a help to us for decades -- The one the UAE doesn't even recognize. What about Israel?
[2] Who's going to be left to vote for republicans? The Abramoff disaster is going to offend the conservative Christians -- They'll just stay home -- and that's a lot of votes.
And down on the Mexican border the Minutemen are patroling, and all the time thinking that it's really the Feds job to do it -- And THAT'S a lot of votes.
And now the Administration says -- Take this Deal like it or not!
Who's going to be left to vote for republicans?
Can someone please tell me what UAE is actually buying...what are they paying 6+ billion for? Nothing? Funny, I still dont' know what "port operations" are. The way some argue, UAE is paying for the ports to have control of nothing. However, UAE paying billions to "just watch" or "sit on the sidelines" scares me.
Common sense prevails? You gotta be kidding me. We just may make it yet.
On to Iran the next stop on the war on terror train. And in the meantime, and until our war against some muslims is done, no muslims hangin out at our ports in any capacity for any reason.
For some around FR, that is an impossibility. Bush is not much of a conservative. Can't expect members of his contingent of sycophant-apologizers to be anything different.
