But Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar appears to have acted alone, campus police say
A UNC-Chapel Hill graduate told investigators he intentionally drove into a crowd of students on campus Friday to "avenge the deaths of Muslims around the world," UNC Police Chief Derek Poarch said Saturday.
Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar, 22, told detectives to go to the Carrboro apartment he shared with two other men, saying authorities would find evidence there that would explain his decision to hurt students. Poarch declined to say what, if anything, was found, but emphasized that Taheri-azar appears to have acted alone.
It does not appear that Friday's attack had anything to do with a recent editorial criticizing Arabs and a cartoon depicting the prophet Muhammad in the campus newspaper, both of which angered many Muslim students, Poarch said at a news conference Saturday.
But because Taheri-azar's statements to police suggested a political motive, campus authorities contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation, he said.

This story is surprising not because the guy is a Muslim but because he's an Iranian living in the United States. In the 20 something years of conversing with Iranian Muslims here I don't think i've found a real devout Muslim most are pro-American and extremely critical of the IRI. That's what makes me wonder if this guy is somehow affiliated with the Iranian government.
Terrorism; The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons.
This sounds like terrorism to me?
What is the difference?
What is the difference?
None....that is exactly what I meant..the two are one in the same..
That enrages me...and ~informs~ me about the character of the battle we face.
Incredible as it seems, I believe what you say because I heard similar plausible reports from New Jersey. I think a bit of this has been in the media but ~extremely~ muted.
- D A N G E R: Nuances ahead -
The media needs to be very careful in what they report. Overheated media coverage could literally launch a war -- a real war, a hot war -- of civilizations. All the atom bombs are not, unfortunately, on our side. Pakistan has some. And nukes aside, the destruction of ME oil production/distribution could make for some very, cold hungry winters (like when out on the Great Plains back in the 30s when people were eating their dogs). The media is right to be damn careful.
BUT, on the other hand, the media also must inform us of the reality. They make us ~more~ vulnerable by sugarcoating it. If Arab communities in the U.S. were celebrating 9/11 in siginifcant numbers (and I believe they probably were), then America's survival could depend on people understanding the seriousness of the threat that these communities pose.
The converage of the SUV lunatic has clearly been muted up to now. If it was a solitary act, it need to be reported in that context and not unreasonably inflamed. But it does need to be reported. It is a serious incident on the struggle against Islamic terrorism. The media should not inflame the situation, but it is also not their proper role to suppress reality.
Careful is one thing, but outright not reporting news is wrong. The media bash Bush for what the military does in Iraq, but Dont rememeber them asking questions after Blackhawk Down.Maybe I missed something.
If this was a KKK Nut who attacked a bunch of Muslims, you better believe that not only would there be outrage, but also riots in the Uncivilized parts of the world and calls for the FBI to investigate every nut with a white sheet over their head.
One day there will be a war with the Muslims. It wont matter if they are sitting on the oil or not. It has to happen. When One side forces their beliefs on a bunch of people who dont want it, it will come to blows.
Don't know where you live but funny you should say that!
As it happens, there ~was~ a KKK incident this year in Durham, another liberal, university community less than ten miles from UNC and the SUV attack.
What happened in Durham was that some clown lit up crosses, KKK-style, one night, at three different locations around Durham.
Believe me, the KKK in Durham is not a problem! No sheet has been seen in this community for fifty years. It is ALL about leftie causes, minority this and homosexual that, they never shut up with their leftie whining.
So some clown burned these crosses. That's all. No violence, no notes, no claim of responsibility...just three burning crosses.
THE TOWN AND MEDIA WENT ABSOLUTELY NUTS! This was treated as the worst hate crime ever seen on this planet. And law enforcement made a furious response. The governor chipped in a special reward fund to catch the perps. I believe the FBI got involved. Prayerful community meetings were held.
A few weeks before that, Durham, which is actually a very violent town, had a "home invasion" style killing of four young black men in an upscale condominium. There is alot of gang/drug killing in Durham, but four at a time in upscale housing adjacent to normal, professional people...well, it seemed a big deal to me.
That killing did not get twenty per cent of the news coverage as three crosses flickering, almost unnoticed, late in the night.
Yes, it will be interesting to see how the response of this community to an ugly but harmless symbolic act by a KKK loser with this real act of attempted murder by an Islamic jihadist against nine people.
But this is the point to me. Say someone else does the same thing. I'm sure we can all think of countless violent crimes against multiple people. And some of them even have the excuse that the government has wronged them or wronged someone else the criminal feels a tie to. The only thing that differentiates this is his religion. Are we going to start labeling every violent crime against multiple citizens of a state a terrorist act?
If this had been an attack that had been planned by a group to forward an agenda or to attack a portion of our infrastructure (be it economical, electrical, or transportation) I could see a terrorist charge added to this. However in this instance it's sort of like adding hate crime to a murder charge. The other problem with adding a terrorist charge to this is it very well could become a federal case. What exact crime did he commit that can not be prosecuted under existing statutes within the state? I do believe he's been charged with 9 counts of attempted murder.
And don't get too mad at me for that ;) Just thinking it through today and that's some of the thoughts I've come up with.
Heard a lot about that lately haven't you? I called WRAL a couple of weeks ago 'concerned' about the lack of coverage. I also asked if they had received any relevant information from the church of Morris Dees which still has it listed on their website as a hate crime during the year of 2005. I stated surely almost a year later they had leads, especially considering according to the city poll a few weeks back less than 20% of Durham citizens felt unsafe out after dark, there must be Klansmen running up and down the streets of Durham after dark they could arrest...
Perhaps he was reading this 'report' and he just snapped.(sarc) Notice the 'article' attributes the same 'informed sources' the MSM also uses...

I have been seriously thinking of taking it up as a personal cross to contact every TV news director in the country and furnish them with the devastating Harper's Magazine piece on this man who has made a personal fortune from calling other people racists.
Media in general, but especially local TV stations, need to be monitored and called on it (in a constructive way) every time that they parrott one of his news releases as though it had some moral authority. And they do it ALL the time. Networks, too, even FOX.
(If anyone doesn't know, Dees runs the highly profitable Southern Poverty Law Center. He has been completely discredited by Harpers and other serious media but is still widely treated as a civil rights saint.)
Unfortunately they won't listen. Everytime I hear a news report quoting Morris, I send the Harper's article to them immediately. Would be interesting to revisit that article and see if it could be updated (maybe even have a separate side article on Heidi Beyr--ich).
I've heard him say some stunningly hateful and inflamatory things over the years. Happily, the N&O quoted him in some real ugly remark about a year ago and I have it retained somewhere. I see there is some celebration of him underway (or about to start) around Duke or Durham in the next week or two. But celebrations of him are like roads named MLK....they proliferate like bunnies and can never be irradicated.
Here in Pittsburgh, the Blacks were complaining about how many blacks were committing crimes and over the whites who were doing crimes. they said the news media were over- reporting black criminals.
the local news media response, they stopped reporting anything that might tell you the race of the criminals.
My sister was a Cop in the city, and she told me half the crime dont get reported because it would scare the hell out of everyone. I brought a police scanner, and it is true.
"...makes me wonder if this guy is somehow affiliated with the Iranian government."
I've been wondering too. I'll tell you what I came up with. He's in the US, studying, and while he is busy, all's well. But then he graduates, he has time on his hands. He goes to the mosque. And the cleric flips that little trip-switch most muslims have instead of the ability to think as an individual. And how does the cleric do it? By telling him fantastic lies. Lies about US military raping Iraqi schoolgirls on buses, for example.
Islam allows clerics to tell lies. Islam ENCOURAGES lies! To further the cause of allah, all lies are permitted.
And when the leaders, the clerics, the 'spiritual advisors' LIE TO THEIR FOLLOWERS what else can you expect but an effed up congregation of wound up mohammadans, ready to kill the 'infidel'?
Arthur Koestler, who lived in Jerusalem before WW2, wrote; The Jew and his arab landlord lived peacefully from Saturday to Thursday. On Friday, the arab went to the mosque, and when he returned, he killed his Jewish tenant family, women and children included, with a kitchen knife. (paraphrased.)
Monitor the clerics in the mosques. They have had 1400 years of practice on how to manipulate minds. It's terrifying to think this weirdo studied psychology and philosophy and still acted like a barbarian as soon as he was 'switched on'.
So religious Revenge is OK? Good because I have a score to settle with those damn Methodists. They cheated at the Methodist v Catholic Softball Game last August.
