Air America Appears To Lose Flagship Station
Instapundit ^ | 3/3/06 | Brian Maloney

While Air America Radio's loss of two affiliates in Phoenix and Missoula, Montana is generating news this week, the company itself probably hasn't been able to give either city a second thought.

Why? In a development sure to rip the heart right out of the liberal radio network's already ailing body, it appears extremely likely their leased New York City flagship station WLIB-AM will soon abandon Air America programming.

Even worse, litigation looks probable over the station's lease.

While the network's last day on WLIB isn't known for certain, an internal source providing backing documentation points to the end of March. At this time, Air America parent Piquant LLC has no firm back-up plan for where in the nation's largest radio market its programming will now air.

Some inside the firm are already referring to WLIB in the past tense.

Without WLIB, Air America faces an immediate, crushing blow. Worth perhaps 100 small markets combined, an on-air presence in New York City is absolutely vital to the company's survival. If an immediate and suitable replacement isn't found, the consequences would be dire.

What percentage of Air America's audience would disappear overnight, the Radio Equalizer can't say for sure. Could it be 40%? Fifty percent?

Taking control of Inner City Broadcasting Corporation (ICBC)- owned WLIB is said to be a consortium of industry heavyweights, including former Clear Channel executive Randy Michaels and Boston-based broadcast investment firm Alta Communications, in partnership with ICBC.

I heard today that some public school kids are getting extra credit listening to this crap. What will they have to do now? Read?

I saw one of them in the Virgin Megastore in Times Square earlier this week.

I think they do have DVDs, but I'm not sure if they're just concerts, or tours, or what.

I'll give them the dollar. There is far more entertainment value in watching their business dealings than actually listening to their programs.

I'll put in another $1 and now they (PBS/NPR) can make a truly block-buster offer for Err America.

Springer did indeed have a show for a while.

We have Springer on the Clear Channel station in Cleveland(1100), 9 to 11:30 am. Laura Ingraham is on opposite on 1420. I don't know if anyone listens to Jerr--Ree or not. I guess we'll find out when or if his contract is renewed.

The same thing that is now happening to Alice Gore's TV show.

I have Current right next to the weather channel, so I'm always cruising past it and sometimes stop to see what's going on. It seems not to be very ideological, but then again it seems not to be very interesting either. The much ballyhooed "innovations" seem to boil down to having a little graphic showing how much time the segment has left. A little digital chotchke that adds nothing to the show. No, Algore is no video threat to the established order.

Only fat and balding Libs listen to Err America? Sounds about right!

Actually, a picture of Meathead satisfies all of the above adjectives...

Inconceivable!!!

I siad I thought they might have done a little better with professional broadcasters, adn I do think that. It still wouldn't have been enough to save their useless network, but the fact that they chose to use non-broadcasters was one more stupid decision that hastened hte inevitable.

It is probably more to do with the fact that liberals have the MSM and so a liberal talk show has to compete with all the other liberal MSM outlets. I mean liberals have CBS, NBC, ABC, NPR, CNN, and the other cable outlets except (some of) Fox News.

Disagree. Left wing folk engage in politics as a means of personal validation. They have no interest in going into the depth on the issues which make political talk radio engaging.

Don't feel bad though, it was a good guess for a subgenius ;-)

Meathead is looking more like a meatball these days. Or, more accurately, like 300 pounds of meatballs.

300? I'd say Meathead's at least a 20 stone mullion...if he were a girl, he'd be a SlumpBuster.

I have not bought into any MSM media campaign as I can think for myself, unlike many blind followers of GWB.

Answer a couple of questions, I will pose them so a simple yes or no will suffice: Has GWB done all he can to stem the flow of criminal aliens crossing our border to the south? Does he intend to close the border to the flow of criminal aliens? Did GWB sign the CFR (campaign finance reform) bill into law reportedly with the understanding that it was an infringement to our first amendment thinking the SC would overturn parts of it? Has GWB vetoed any pork barrel spending bills? Did he say two weeks ago that he would veto any attempt to cancel the UAE port deal in congress? And then two days later say that he was not part of the deal investigation and did not know of the outcome until the day he said he would veto any attempt to cancel it?

Based on these few facts, and I can cite many more, is GWB a conservative? Has he been acting reasonably? Does he act in the best interests of our nations borders, language, and culture? Yes or no will do just fine. Thanks.
