End Gypsy prejudice: Vatican

From: Reuters From correspondents in Rome
March 01, 2006

EUROPE must drop its prejudices against Gypsies, the Vatican said today, in a document that called for more understanding of the nomadic peoples that have been persecuted through the centuries.

In a study of the position of Gypsies in society, an advisory body to the Pope said traditionally Christian countries had persecuted them in the past and that deep-rooted prejudice remained as Europe faced a "new wave" of Gypsy migration. "Considered by many as harmful aliens and insistent beggars, public opinion usually clamours for nomadism to be banned," the report by the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People said.

"Throughout history this has resulted in persecutions that have been justified almost as a health measure."

Historians say the Nazis killed about a half million Gypsies in World War II.

Gypsies are a diverse ethnic group thought to originate in India.

A westward migration of Europe's Gypsies presented major challenges for local populations who mistrust the outsiders, the report said, recommending the Church help bridge the gap between the nomads and the local communities where they live.

But Gypsies too, who tend to be mistrustful of outsiders, needed to ensure they were living within the law.

"Activities that produce 'easy money' on the borderline or even beyond legality should therefore definitely be given up," it said.

In 1997 Pope John Paul beatified a Gypsy man shot by firing squad during the Spanish Civil War, the first Gypsy to be put in line for sainthood.

The report said the Church had a "special concern" for Gypsies and should make more effort in evangelising the people who it described as usually very religious but who often get involved in sects, superstitions and practices such as fortune telling.

My father-in-law grew up in Croatia and talks about how gypsies would barge through a house playing music and dancing as a distraction while the rest of the gang put everything they could in their pockets, and then they danced and sang back out of the house.

It was the artistic version of a smash 'n grab.

Heard an old folk saying:

"If you meet a Gypsy and a snake, kill the Gypsy first."

There's a difference between being street smart and irrationally prejudiced. If you see a crowd of Gypsies coming toward you. Get the heck out of there or at least grab on to your valuables tight.

Ah. Gypsies: the new midgets of prejudice. I know a midget when I see one, I'm not sure I could identify a gypsy, though.;)

I was involved in ministry to the Rom (gypsies) in the late '70's. They are wonderful, fascinating people. Many are evangelical Christians!
