US President George W. Bush signalled his opposition to a South Dakota abortion ban that forbids the procedure even in cases of rape or incest, saying he favors such exceptions.
But Bush declined to predict the outcome of any legal challenges to the legislation, which would make it illegal to terminate a pregnancy except in rare cases when it may be necessary to save the life of the mother.
"That, of course, is a state law, but my position has always been three exceptions: Rape, incest, and the life of the mother," the US president told ABC news in an interview.
Asked whether he would include "health" of the mother, Bush replied: "I said life of the mother, and health is a very vague term, but my position has been clear on that ever since I started running for office."
The bill, which recently gained final approval from South Dakota's House of Representatives, directly contradicts the precedent set in 1973 when the US Supreme Court ruled that bans on abortion violate a woman's constitutional right to privacy.
The bill grants no allowances for women who have been raped or are victims of incest. Doctors who perform abortion would be charged with a crime. It also prohibits the sale of emergency contraception and asserts that life begins at fertilization.
The governor of South Dakota has indicated he is likely to sign the bill.
A leading pro-choice advocacy group has already vowed to challenge the ban in federal court. But that seems to be exactly what many promoters of the legislation seek.
Advocates of the ban do not deny they aim much higher than South Dakota, a rural and socially conservative state, which even today has only one abortion clinic.
Instead, they are hoping the bill will offer a full frontal assault on legal abortions now that the balance of power in the Supreme Court appears to have shifted with the confirmation of conservative jurists John Roberts and Samuel Alito, both of whom are seen as pro-life.

I was responding to your claim about rape. You said nothing about incest in your original post.
I think maybe a better way to put it is many evangelicals and practicing Catholics see life, any life, no matter how conceived, a blessing from God.
In addition, someone suggested a morning after pill. Again, especially in the Catholic faith, people believe life begins at conception. So a morning after pill is out of the question for them too.
Of course I know many evangelicals who are ardent pro-life, yet they themselves use oral contraceptives which cause a fertilized egg to pass the uterus and become part of the monthly menstrual flow. They reason it does this is the oral contraceptive causes the uterus to be hostile to implantation. But it is a fertilized egg, with cell division and DNA already underway. So of those pro-life folks using those types of oral contraceptives are possibly some of the folks who were so strident in calling you out for wanting to allow, like the President has suggested, abortion for cases of rape, incest or where the life of the mother was in danger.
Latter. In the game Rainbow Six, counter operations always ended clean with no hostage caualties. In real life, a perfect operation is nothing short of a miracle. More often than not, many hostages died along the way.
Even if a few of these people can't be saved, there is no point in seeing all of them die. If that is the only choice, then I would ultimately choose the latter.
I have heard stories of rape victims bearing children and recall that many of them chose to keep them, not even putting them up for adoption.
Like I said, with much needed help, they would choose to do the right thing. And the only "casualty" will be the scumbag who defiled her.
By the way, I wouldn't go posting picture on the internet of a child in the context we're discussing now...seems a but unseemly, don't you think? Do you care about anyone's feelings or life except that of unborn children? Unbelievable.

Probably a bad choice of words Peach. Some postnatal people are not fully formed. They can not be killed. A baby in the first trimester is a unique human being. In fact as soon as the egg and sperm merge you have a unique human being.
It is less barbaric that killing the innocent child.

Well, that's funny because I feel sorry for the women in your life if you're so barbaric that you don't understand the trauma a fully formed woman will feel being forced to carry the unborn child of a rape.
