ISRA Press Release Cabela's Targeted by Latest Daley/Blagojevich Gun Control Scheme

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Feb. 6 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The following was released today by the Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA):

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and Governor Rod Blagojevich have teamed up to push legislation designed to thwart plans by a major hunting/fishing retailer to open a superstore in suburban Chicago. The bill, HB4693, would make it nearly impossible for any law-abiding entity to engage in the lawful retail sale of firearms in the state.

Cabela's, based in Sidney, NE, recently announced plans to build a destination superstore in northwest suburban Hoffman Estates. The store would employ 400 people and feature a wide variety of gear to meet the needs of every outdoor sportsman. Of course, the retail sale of firearms would be a major component of the store's business.

Cabela's announcement comes at a time when Blagojevich and Daley are pulling out all stops end private firearm ownership in the state. Within recent weeks, their backers in the legislature have introduced several bills intended to suck the life out of the state's long standing heritage of safe and lawful firearm ownership. Included along with HB4693 is HB2414 -- a highly controversial bill that would ban gun collecting and competitive shooting.

"We feel bad for Cabela's and the people of Hoffman Estates," said ISRA Executive Director Richard Pearson. "The village has worked hard for 3 years to bring Cabela's to town. Just a few weeks ago, the village trustees voted unanimously to repeal the village's gun registration ordinance to facilitate Cabela's move. Hoffman Estates jumped ship, and Daley won't stand for that. Thus, we see the introduction of HB4693, which is a clear attempt to undo what the Hoffman Estates village trustees have accomplished. This is yet another example of Mayor Daley looking to extend his power and control beyond Chicago's city limits."

"If HB4693 passes into law, no businessperson in their right mind would want to go into, or even stay in, the retail firearms business," continued Pearson. "The fees, red tape, paperwork, and potential criminal liability associated with HB4693 would make the cost of compliance with the law unbearable. Already thin profit margins would be trimmed to near zero. It just wouldn't pay to stay in the retail firearms business -- and that's precisely the intent of this legislation."

"HB4693 and HB2414 constitute a double-pronged attack on lawful firearm ownership," said Pearson. "HB4693 would eliminate retail sales of firearms, and HB2414 would ban many, if not most of the firearms currently owned by law-abiding Illinois citizens. Of course, neither of these bills addresses the criminal use of firearms. But then again, Blagojevich and Daley are not about crime control, they're about banning guns."

---

The ISRA is the state's leading advocate of safe, lawful, and responsible firearms ownership. For more than a century, the ISRA has represented the interests of over 1.5 million law- abiding Illinois firearm owners.

My first post, so I hope I don't screw it up too bad. Thank God I don't live in Illinois. How do these people keep getting elected?

I live in Illinois. These people get elected because the Republican party has been emasculated by the recent George Ryan ethics scandal and the failure of party leadership to offer and support strong conservative candidates.

That being said, I would think such legislation is unconstitutional and should be immediately contested in the courts.

"My first post, so I hope I don't screw it up too bad."

You did great.

"Thank God I don't live in Illinois."

I do. And if I may speak on behalf of the rest of the conservatives in this state, We're sorry. Maybe some of you "super" red state dwellers could send a few of yourselves over here to help even things out.

"How do these people keep getting elected?"

Unions, Chicago:Home of the Jesse Jackson Black Mind Control Looking For A Handout Program, Not enough people downstate (who are generally conservative to moderate) to offset the high liberal condensed Chicago Metro area, and former Republican Governor George Ryan's License For Bribes scandal. Last gov race could have been won by candidate Jack Ryan who was strongly ahead in the polls, until a judge ruled it was O.K. that the press be privey to sealed court documents pertaining to his divorce. Apparently coercing your wife to a sex club is bad for your political future........unless your Bill Clinton.

I also live in Illinois and we who live south of Springfield don't have a prayer against the crooks in Chicago. They think whatever is good for Chicago is fine for the whole state. All of our taxes go up north to support their lifestyles.

I don't recall, to quote Mrs. Clinton, the words safe, lawful, and responsible, anywhere in the second amendment. That might be the beauty of the second amendment, anyone can own firearms until the various federal agencies, states, counties, cities, towns, municipalities, and other governmental entities start exercising their safe, lawful and responsible tactics in defiance of the Constitution of the United States of America.

Not on your life! Chicago has great pizza, but I wouldn't live there under any circumstances!

"They have some of the worst laws in the country."

But we do have the best homeschool laws. Which is good since the anti-christ resides in the public school system here.

Aw come on! If the Libs in New Orleans can be absorbed into red states so that LA can have a fighting chance, why can't some of you infiltrate this heavily blue state to help us have a fighting chance. Or on second thought maybe Bush could call up the next hurricane to hit Chicago.

I don't live in IL, but in the neighboring state of Iowa, which isn't exactly a red state. If you were to look at the red/blue map you would think we were a red state, but the metro areas of Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Quad-Cities and Dubuque have all turned to the dark side.

It's scary to see govenment officals, that were elected to uphold the Constitution, do all in there power to destroy it.

Cabela's should respond by building in Gary, Indiana instead. Then they should mount an advertising blitz in the Chicago market pointing out that the jobs, tax revenue, and economic growth they would have brought to Illinois will be going to Indiana instead, but jobs would still be open to Illinois residents willing to commute across the state line. They should emphasize in their ads that they were very interested in putting a store in the Chicago area, but that excessive, prohibitive, and confiscatory regulations made it economically infeasible to do so.

Because the actual voters can't compete with the dead ones. The precincts with the heaviest voter turnout are Graceland, Mt. Carmel and Waldheim. They always go 100% Dem. My grandfather and Al Capone, Dion O'Banion, Hymie Weiss, Vince Drucci all have voted the straight Machine ticket since 1948.

That's good news about the homeschool laws, however; you are wrong about anti-christ residing in the public school system there. She married my dad and lives in NM. LOL

Blago is married to the daughter of a long time Daley crony and so they are sort of like a communist version of Batman and Robbin.

One thing that would end this crap once and for all is a statewide REFERENDUM on guns because this state government has failed us and the city mayor is running the state. I live in Chicago for many years and I know these two men.

I would like to start a petition without the help of the NRA to end this crap. The people need to speak with no influence from any such organization so that the message is crystal clear. I would like to have some help from all of you to get this organized.

I do need some legal advise on what we can do with respect to a referendum that will protect our 2nd amendment rights. We must stop the steady destruction of the 2nd amendment by the leftists. peopleofillinois@yahoo.com

Talk to me.

This is what will happen. Cabelas Will bribe, oops I mean lobby, the pols in question and the issue will disappear. This is no different than how business is done in the Middle East. It's just that the bribery is done more up front there. Out politicians on both sides of the aisle know this, and have been doing it for decades. Why do you think millionaires run for jobs that pay 100k. It's the power and graft that pays off. Have you ever seen a politician that left office broke?

If someone took the time to do the reseaerch, I bet he or she would find that very few, if any firearms purchased from Cabella's have been used by the original owner to commit a crime. Another "feel good" law that will nothing to make the world a safer place "for the children."
