Homeowner shoots 'ninja' who attacked wife
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 2/27/6 | Jim Doyle

HEALDSBURG -- An armed man wearing a black, ninja-style mask was shot to death by a Healdsburg man this morning after he attacked the man's wife outside their home and chased her inside, police said.

The shooting happened about 7:30 a.m. at the end of Sunset Drive, a semi-rural street on the east side of town.

The woman was about to take the couple's two Wheaton terrier dogs for a walk when the masked man jumped her outside her garage, police said. The woman struggled, broke away and ran screaming into the house, with the attacker in pursuit.

Her screams awoke her husband. The man, whom police identified only as a man in his 60s, "grabbed their handgun, probably a .357 ... and fired more than one shot," Police Chief Susan Jones said.

The intruder "had what looked like a firearm in his hand," Jones said. He died at the scene.

Good evening.
"Very strange stuff for such a sweet little touristy-type town. Must be the redwood pollen in the air."

Cal Trans improved 101 through Santa Rosa and now more of the east coast loonies who moved to the Bay Area are moving north.

I consider the Hopland Bridge to be civilization's southern border.

Clearly the husband's style of kung fu was superior.

Yes, and I consider myself the Impotent Lizard of the North.

This type of shooting in Eureka tends to be of the home invasion variety where you can't tell who the bad guys are...

Good evening.
"...I consider myself the Impotent Lizard of the North."

Pleasure to meet you, your Majesty.

My family and I live a nice quiet, legal existence and we keep to ourselves generally. I've always felt that anyone who bursts into my home is a bad guy, no matter what they wear or what they say. In a perfect world. the good guys would try a less dangerous method of entering my home than by dynamic entry and the bad guys wouldn't even try. Unfortunately scat can happen to anyone. Home invasions do seem to be growing in popularity, don't they.

Hopefully this shooting is righteous and the bad guy got perforated.

I have no doubt thus was on the up and up. The punk could could have been watching her for days. My wife walks with her dog every morning between 5 and 6. She carries a can of pepper spray in her hand and has used it once and twice on dogs. She is too weak wristed for a handgun.

If I ever popped some punk in our house the press would have me sent to death row for my "Arsenal" of orphans inherited over 55 adult years

She is too weak wristed for a handgun.

I doubt that. She needs to learn proper technique, that's all. I had a GF who weighed 100 pounds soaking wet (tiny little thing she was) who had no problem with my Kimber Ultra Carry, which is one of the more obnoxiously recoiling handguns I own.

This surely wasn't in San Francisco where handguns are banned.

You have to remember though, since SF banned handguns, crime is non-existant there.

Here's an update on this, Very interesting:

From San Francisco Chronicle, it is exerpted;

"Healdsburg police said Friday afternoon that the intruder who was fatally shot by Healdsburg resident Lou Phillips in his home Monday was a disgruntled employee who worked with Phillips at an Indian casino in Alpine six years ago and had harbored bad feelings toward Phillips since then.

Police identified the intruder as 48-year-old David Ferguson of San Diego.

Phillips, 68, was chief executive officer of the Viejas Casino and Ferguson was chief financial officer for the tribal government in charge of the casino, Sgt. Tony Pinochi said.

Ferguson audited the tribe's financial records and Phillips questioned Ferguson's work performance and fired Ferguson, Pinochi said.

When Ferguson went to Phillips' home on Sunset Drive Monday morning, he brought bindings, tape, tarps, hot dogs and a blindfold, Pinochi said. Ferguson was dressed in black, wore a ninja mask to hide his identity and carried a folding three-inch knife and a BB gun that resembled a semi-automatic firearm, Pinochi said.

Ferguson had information about the daily activities of Phillips and his wife, police said.

Police said Ferguson attacked 64-year-old Sandra Phillips outside the residence around 7:20 a.m. She escaped and ran screaming into the house, awakening Lou Phillips.

While Ferguson, who followed Sandra into the home, was holding her around the neck, Lou Phillips shot him three times with his .357 Magnum handgun, police said. Ferguson died at the scene."
