Cheney seen retiring after midterm elections (Drudge Siren)

Vice President Dick Cheney is expected to retire within a year.

Senior GOP sources envision the retirement of Mr. Cheney in 2007, months after the congressional elections. The sources said Mr. Cheney would be persuaded to step down as he becomes an increasing political liability to President Bush.

The sources reported a growing rift between the president and vice president as well as their staffs. They cited Mr. Cheney's failure to immediately tell the president of the accidental shooting of the vice president's hunting colleague earlier this month. The White House didn't learn of the incident until 18 hours later.

The last vice-president to leave office early other than by death or coming indictment - John C. Calhoun. Not likely to happen now.

Was Spiro Agnew indicted?

This is a load of horse manure. Has Insight Magazine been taken over by Evan Thomas?

Seriously, the only possible reason why Cheney MIGHT retire then would be to give visibility to a solid presidential candidate for 2008. If so, I sure hope they pick the right guy. Please, no RINOs. If they can't pick the right guy, better to do nothing.

I would think the "Condi '08" garbage would be pushed with all the "44" nickname stories behind it.

Look for Dick Morris to hit O'Reilly and push his book even harder.

Ah, the dreaded unnamed senior GOP sources.

I believe it when I hear it from Cheney.

Since Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert is # 2 in the line of presidential succession, doesn't he automatically move up to V.P.?

No, the President appoints a replacement VP, who is subject to a confirmation hearing by the Senate.

Why did the White House need to know it within 18 minutes, instead of 18 hours.

I would guess that Cheney's Secret Service guys reported it to the white house SS within more like 18 seconds

I don't think Gerald Ford was the Speaker when Agnew stepped down..

No. The President appoints a successor and that successor is confirmed by the Senate. At least that's the way it worked when Gerald Ford became VP.

If Cheney and Dubya went hunting together and shot each other, then Hastert would become the President.
