The Talibans former spokesman, Rahmatullah Hashemi, is now an undergraduate at Yale University, The New York Times reveals in a lengthy cover story by Chip Brown in its Sunday magazine this weekend.
The cover line reads, He was the Talibans spin doctor. So whats he doing at Yale?"
In fact, the story shows, Hashemi was at Yale once beforein 2001, appearing at a forum representing the Taliban, a few months before the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
A small clip of Hashemi appears in Michael Moores Fahrenheit 9/11 film.
In some ways, Hashemi, 27, says today, Im the luckiest person in the world. I could have ended up in Guantanomo Bay. Instead I ended up at Yale. One of the courses he is taking: TerrorismPast, Present and Future.

And the government employee who issued this guy's student visa is still being paid by our tax dollars. Was any of the information on the application even checked and how long after it expires/expired will he stay on American soil? Who's paying for his rent, food, medical, and tuition?

Probably a teacher's assistant.

"If this is accurate about his past, why has the Bush administration not arrested him."
He either turned state's evidence or has powerful friends in the right places. I hope he goes into another "active phase" and is caught by homeland security. Be nice to see this sphincter yelling that we flushed his Koran down the toilet, from behind bars.

Because his official education ended in the fourth grade, the marks eased some of his anxiety about passing muster at Yale. Must of had some awesome SAT scores. WTF?

As he stood in the back hunting for a place to sit, he realized that he had been in Luce Hall before. Four years earlier. March 2001.
{snip}
The university saved a seat for him that afternoon, down on the stage. He was the featured speaker, a "roving ambassador" from the Islamic emirate of Afghanistan.
{snip}
Twenty-two years old and a member of the Taliban at that moment, in fact, the very face and voice of the regime in America. Per decree, his beard was full, his head swaddled in a turban. He was dressed in an Afghan tunic and loose-fitting pants. Neither he nor anyone else in Luce Hall that day could have foreseen the catastrophe ...

His road to America was paved largely by Mike Hoover, an American TV cameraman who had met Hashemi in Afghanistan. I thought he could do a lot as a student/teacher, Hoover said.
Naivete shows no bounds.

I highly expect the "roving ambassador" must have been working or turned quickly to the CIA to save his butt and must have given alot of intelligence.

He likely cut some deal.
After WW II, we let in many a Nazi because of their knowledge and connections.
It still sucks when it happens. There are many other places he should be...other than at Yale.
