feh.
If you go to Control Panel and look at the hardware devices on the pc, does it show a listing for 'universal serial bus controllers', and then a list of drivers under that?

Well, it looks like the pc does have usb drivers (the line about Intel), but they are not happy. It knows it has usb ports, but not what to do with them (neither the canon or the usb key works).
Does Compaq's site have downloads for that pc? I'm thinking of chipset drivers. They might be part of a larger download like a 'system' download, that has the OS and all of the 'Compaq Crud' included. The only problem with an integrated 'system' type file is that it would probably wipe the drive before installing--not a good thing.
Try Compaqs site, and see what they've got. There are still other things that we can try, but at least we've exhausted the existing hardware options.

Found a spot that may help!
To find what type ,try going to control panel>system, on that screen, click on the general tab, it should give the oem info and model

oops. sorry. capslock.
KODT, we done our best, but this POS Compaq needs to become a boat anchor.
IYellAtMyTV, thanks for all your efforts, but I truly believe this is now past the point of practicality.

for some reason, HP (apparently they own Compaq now) does not believe that this POS is supported by live chat tech support.
