Former President Jimmy Carter downplayed criticism of White House support of an Arab-owned company's purchase of a major seaport-operations firm.

WASHINGTON - President Bush is taking a battering from fellow Republicans, even the governors of New York and Maryland, over the administration's support for a decision that gives an Arab company control of some commercial operations at six major seaports -- including Miami-Dade's.

But he got a boost Monday from an unlikely source, frequent critic and former president Jimmy Carter, who downplayed fears that the deal poses a risk.

''The overall threat to the United States and security, I don't think it exists,'' Carter said on CNN's The Situation Room. ``I'm sure the president's done a good job with his subordinates to make sure this is not a threat.''

This is probably why Bush told Homeland Security to squash the deal on Monday!

Now I know we're on the right track opposing this.

True. No one has a better record of being wrong than the peanut farmer who gave away the Panama Canal.

If that is not the kiss of death for this deal, nothing is. When has Carter ever been right about anything?

Took the words right out of my mouth.

The way I understand it is that the governor's have a lot of discretion in the contract and it will require their approval.

It's not a done deal yet.

It is really sad that the Democratic Party and Antique media picks Jimmy Carter as leader and speaker. To me this shows a bankrupt party with no hope of winning anything.

You two REALLY ought to go back through and read all the replies on this thread. Neither of you are looking any too sharp.

Supporting the POTUS doesnt equate to sycophancy....

Granted I support the POTUS but think this is a bad idea for political reasons more than practical, but most of the time....I am probably a Bush-bot since most things he does makes sense.

Thinking above the fray or playing devils advocate...we need support in the region, the U.A.E has always provided that...this may be reciprocation for that support and a show of trust to the Arab world that the U.S. will support its allies in the region. And, honestly, do you think the port is going to be immediately staffed with militant islamofacists? Just because ownership changes...as much as US ports are regulated (Port authorities)...how much will it really change? (Please no rant about how our ports are unprotected, I realize they have shortcomings.)

I'm baffled as to why anyone would give a fig what Carter says or does.

I only care so that I know to choose the opposite side of whatever the issue. I had already opposed the sale to DPI, but Carter's support just validates my position.
