Bitter Cold Spreads Across Much of U.S.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. Feb 19, 2006 (AP)— Utility crews worked Sunday to restore power to thousands of homes and businesses from Michigan to Maine following a weekend winter storm, while slick roads and heavy winds were blamed for several deadly accidents.

As far south as Texas, ice and freezing rain canceled dozens of flights over the weekend at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, including 85 American Airlines flights, according to a company spokesman.

Little Rock, Ark., had a Sunday morning low of 18. Farther west, Alliance, Neb., bottomed out at 8 below, the National Weather Service said.

In the Upper Midwest, the 8 a.m. reading of 2 below zero at Duluth, Minn., combined with 17 mph wind for a wind chill of 23 below.

A reading of 18 below was recorded in Allagash, Maine, while temperatures dipped to a low of 10 degrees in Rochester and wind of up to 17 mph made it feel like almost 10 below zero, weather service said.

It was 65 here (Iowa) on Tuesday; I was running around without a coat. Friday it got down to minus 12. Thursday we had a snowstorm with near-blizzard conditions.

We are used to changing weather...but that's a bit much!

That's quite a change in temperatures within a few days.

Stay warm!

Poem appropriate to the weather but not the month. Feast day of Agnes is January 21.

Another fitting poem (for the weather) is the beginning of T.S. Eliot's "Journey of the Magi" "A cold coming we had of it..."

Thanks. I'm also glad he survived his first experience of having a machine gun pulled on him. Apparently the scouts went for a hike after midnight in an effort to keep the blood circulating, and went far enough to stray close to Camp David. Some of the black-clad guards stepped out from behind trees, guns drawn, and demanded to know what they thought they were doing there. Kid thought it was cool.

This is no more evidence of a lack of global warming as a warming event is for global warming.

Boy you can say that again. Its very clear no global warming.

LOL! I went to a summer camp not too far from there when I was a kid for a few years.

Always wanted to go harrass the Camp David folks :-)

Where are you in Iowa? I'm going to Iowa City at the end of the month and am afraid I'll freeze if the current temps keep up. Wasn't it about -15 w/the windchill?!!

It must be the global warming.
Not down here in the Clearwater, FL area! I'm out on my screened porch and its dropped to 67 degrees. Its brutal. Luckily I have a little ceramic heater under my table cranked (actually I just turned it down) otherwise I might have to change out of my shorts, sandals and Hawaiian shirt and put on some long pants.

In any article on global warming or cooling I cannot believe they never address the glacial ages and why they came and went. It wasn't the SUVs I am certain. Half of North America was covered with a sheet of ice. I give Mother Nature more credit than I do man for climate variations.

Rub it in for those poor souls suffering in below zero temperatures! ;)

I am in CA and it's been around 60 today, and I restrained myself from making those freezing their noses off, feel bad -- no wonder CA & FL real estate is high and is going to stay that way. A lot of people who survive that winter, won't want to go through another one.

Why is cold "bitter"? I can't taste it. Why isn't it bitterly hot in the summer time?

Like Spock said: "bitter dregs."

With the windchill it was at least that...we had a windchill warning for up to twenty below the other day! I'm in the central Iowa area...a little West of Iowa City.

It looks like it will warm up over the next week (into the 30's at least). But most of Jan and Feb have been wonderfully warm; 50's and 60's many days.

Be sure to check the forecast on TWC's website before you leave so you'll know what to pack. This time of year can be very unpredictable! We sometimes have temperature drops of 20 or 30 degrees during the day if a front moves through.

It was a balmy 22 today...Hooray!

Shh! I'm enticing the northerners down here to run up the RE prices and then I'm moving! Before Forida we were in San Diego, CA - a beautiful city but what we see here, as there, is whenever some whackjob needs to get out of town its either California or Florida not to mention the gypsies who like to come down south with the rest of the snowbirds.

Then aside from annoying hurricanes we have spiders that you can actually hear running across your wall. We don't use flyswatters for bugs around here we use RPGs.

In Guadalajara, MX they use lead drain plugs to keep out the roaches - doesn't work here 'cause the bastids have wings! They're called Palmetto Bugs in polite company but they're just roaches with wings, Trust me.

Oh and 9 months out of the year plan on sweating as you walk to your car between AC refuges. Gardening? Can you spell heat stroke? Down here if you take off enough clothing to cool off you'll be arrested! Come on down! Buy my property. Please!

I don't know what it is, but I'm in eastern upstate NY and this is the first winter I ever remember with no snow. Instead, my neighbor's fence blew into my backyard and two old pines are down in my daughter's backyard. We didn't lose power, but the other side of town did. Trees down everywhere, grocery stores closed for lack of power, major highways closed. We've only ever had one windstorm that was equal to what we had the other day and that was 1989, I think. Winds were 30-70 mph and 143 on top of Stratton. Needless to say, my grandson's ski trip was canceled for the second week in a row. Last week it was heavy rain and this week it was the wind. Usually February has us with at least two feet of snow on the ground and 4/5 ft. snowbanks. This year, there isn't a flake to be found.
