Brit Hume: Bush Will Reverse Ports Decision
NewsMax ^ | 2/19/06 | Carl Limbacher

Posted on 02/19/2006 10:30:27 AM PST by LibWhacker

The Bush administration will reverse its decision to allow a Dubai company based in the United Arab Emirates to gain control over several key U.S. ports, the Fox News Channel's Brit Hume predicted on Sunday.

"I don't think the administration will be able to sustain this," Hume told "Fox News Sunday." "I think it will have to reverse itself in some way or create some entity that stands between the company and the management of the ports."

"I just don't think [the decision] can stand," he added. "It doesn't sound good to let some Arab shieks to be in charge of our ports - that's what it comes down to."

Appearing on the same program, Sen. Lindsey Graham slammed the ports decision, saying, "It's unbelievably tone deaf politically at this point in our history, four years after 9/11, to entertain the idea of turning port security over to a company based in the U.A.E., who avows to destroy Israel."

In a decision announced last week, the Bush administration's Committee on Foreign Investment approved the purchase of six major U.S. ports by the U.A.E.-based Dubai Ports World.

The move set off a firestorm of criticism, with skeptics complaining that banks in the U.A.E. have helped launder money for terrorists and that the country itself was home to Marwan al Shehhi, the Sept. 11 hijacker who piloted United Airlines Flight 175 into Tower 2 of the World Trade Center.

On Friday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice defended the Dubai deal, telling a Mideast news outlet: "There was a thorough review. It was decided that this could be done and done safely."

were charged Wednesday with stealing $1.3 million and using the money on Super Bowl tickets, lingerie and bar tabs.

They say this like it is a bad thing. The "lingerie" charges are a front for prostitution, or limosine service. It should still be investigated, with open hearings.

Bush usually screws up when he tries to play the role of "compassionate conservative" and becomes politically correct.

Do "Religion of Peace," Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta and FBI Director Robert Mueller ring any bells?

IMO, we should severely limit travel from terrorist states to the U.S. If a nation's citizens loathe the U.S. and don't recognize Israel's right to exist, you're talking about a very problematic state.

Should be be allowing people to slip through our parameter from these nations? Frankly, I don't see why we should.

The question then arises, if such agreements increase travel from terrorist states, or even problematic states, is it wise to implement the plan? When management types come here, are we assured they are above temptation? Does their vision of Allah play into a terrorist sympathizing act?

I have concerns over issues like this. Even if things look like they are on the up and up, what prevents things from going south, if temperaments change?

My G-d, our SoS argues that we can safely turn over our strategic ports to our sworn enemies.

NOW HERE THIS! I don't care the reason.

With MNJohnnie everything's about politics, even when it comes to national security. If the democrats are against something as they are here then we MUST all be for it. There's no gray area with him, it's just black and white.

Exactly. When in the entire history of capitalism has an owner of any business voluntarily given up his right to have any say in how his company is run? Never.

As long as a UAE company owns the ports, they're going to have considerable influence over how they are run, and there's the danger. IMHO.

Umm nope. Sorry Brit but maybe you should do some research instead of just reading the Democrat Senate Committees Press release. Whole problem is the Junk Journalists have not even bothered to find out one actual fact. All they have done is taken Chucky Schumer's Press release and reported it as fact. Maybe some REAL journalists should be saying "Hmm, Chucky says this, the Admin says this, they both cannot be correct" I guess considering how frequently and easy the Democrats lie these days, a real journalist would be HIGHLY suspicious of a story the Democrat Senate Election committee is pushing.

When you lay with the pigs........you smell like the pigs........when you brown nose........well.......you smell like the pigs.....!!! You insult the integrity of FReepers when you try to convince us that something we KNOW is wrong.......is right...!! Give it a rest.......our eyes have been opened to Bush's destruction of America!!! IF you would get your nose out of his.......well......you know, you might be able to SEE the truth.

Good. How this deal was even allowed to get this far is unfathomable. It's a huge blow to the perception that Republicans are better on national defense.

Regardless of the details, the simple headline that UAE controls our ports is a political sinkhole.

From the article: "I don't think the administration will be able to sustain this," Hume told "Fox News Sunday." "I think it will have to reverse itself in some way or create some entity that stands between the company and the management of the ports."

"I just don't think [the decision] can stand," he added. "It doesn't sound good to let some Arab shieks to be in charge of our ports - that's what it comes down to."

Funny... this is EXACTLY what my husband said to me on Friday. [I wish he'd stop doing that. ;)]

I am more suspicious of the line you are pushing...as if it's no big deal to allow muslims (aka terrorists) to run our strategic ports.

It is a big deal and it must be stopped even if takes demoncraps to do it. How disgusting is that? I don't know about some others, but for me, it's a mega barf alert of gargantuan proportions.

it is stupid to give the opposition anti-War 'rats ANY issue where they can look stronger on defense and homeland security than the President.

It certainly is stupid, very stupid IMHO. Putting a Arab owned company in charge of American ports may be safe if what I have read about the people who will actually operate the ports is correct. But it's an absolute disaster from a public relations standpoint.

Allowing this sale to go through would just be tossing the Democrats an underhand slow pitch for them to hit out of the ballpark. National defense/homeland security is by far the Repubs strongest point in the minds of the general public, why allow the Dems to knock a big hole in that strong point when it isn't necessary?
