Indiana eyes full abortion disclosure
Washington Times ^ | 13 February 2006

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana women seeking an abortion would be told that life begins at conception under a proposal that would give the state one of the farthest-reaching abortion consent laws in the country.

Only one state -- South Dakota -- has gone so far in what it orders doctors to tell women before they can get abortions, and a court has blocked that law.

Supporters say the legislation would provide women key information before making an irreversible decision, but critics argue it blurs the line between church and state and could infringe on doctors' First Amendment rights.

"To put our religion or faithful beliefs into a statute that's going to be law, without being able to back it up scientifically, I have real hard questions about doing that," said Indiana Rep. John Ulmer, a Republican who voted against the bill.

Indiana is one of 29 states with "informed consent" laws that require women seeking an abortion to receive information about the procedure, according to the Guttmacher Institute, a reproductive rights organization in New York and Washington, D.C., that researches and tracks state abortion legislation.

Most tell women that assistance is available for prenatal care, childbirth and infant care if they decide to carry their pregnancy to term.

Three states -- Arkansas, Nevada and Wisconsin -- provide information about the possible psychological effects of an abortion.

I wonder if SCOTUS will declare telling the truth "unconstitutional"...

Geez, with Republican morons like this, who needs Democrats? Any honest biologist would testify that at conception you've got a full set of chromosomes and are "alive." That's not religion. It's science.

Doctors' first amendment rights?

Hmmmm...I thought that they were duty bound, and have to uphold their ethics and scientific duty.

Given ample evidence over the past 30+ years, it seems nothing could be further from the truth!

You really hear PPH squawking about this one. Based on what I have read in the local paper there are two laws being considered; The full disclosure law mentioned above and one that would make abortion clinics conform to state mandated building standards like all other medical, dental and veterinary clinics. PPH has decided that if they have to meet state standards for their buildings they will have to close them all down. Kind of makes you wonder what kind of operations their running.

As for the abovementioned law, all I can say is that everytime I have gone in for any medical procedure from wisdom teeth to colonoscopy to my mom's heart surgery I/we have been given considerable info on the risks and benefits and have had to sign a waiver saying we understand what we are doing and that we agree to the procedure. PPH doesn't think that women contemplating one of the most life changing decisions they will ever make have the same right to that level of info before making that decision. Again kind of makes you wonder what they are afraid of doesn't it?

Whenever I read something like this, I just presume that the massive data banks of the Planned Parenthood mafia contain some dirt on the legislator or a family member.

They're afraid that some women may change their minds. Always remember - - it's all about the money. If Wal-Mart suffers a 3% decline in sales, believe me, that is huge. Same idea with the Planned Parenthood abortion industry. If 3 out of every 100 women change their minds, that's quite a financial loss for those animals.

As long as the lawmakers emphasize the biological unique DNA and don't make this law an intent to inject religion (failing the purpose prong of the SC Lemon Test) it should be fine.

In realty, abortion is todays version of child sacrifice to Satan. In Satanic sacrificial rituals, the purer the sacrificed victim (and hence more evil and perverted), the more powerful the sacrifice. And there is nothing purer than an unborn baby.

This is why all of these evil groups are so shrill about defending abortion.

After years of bickering about "Time Zones" and Interstates that have been scheduled to be built since at least 1972, I'm shocked and pleasantly surprised that this may actually become law.

The second bill forcing clinics to conform to state standards, which will effectively shut down the abortion mills is even better. Afterall we constantly hear that abortion is for the mothers health, you would think that PPH would want their "clinics" to have a high standard, obviously for the mothers health. I mean otherwise those "clinics" would just be abortion mills

These two bills are the best damn legislation this state has produced in decades.

Laudable as it sounds, any legislation that ends with "and then you can kill the baby," is wrong.

No one can consent to the taking of another's life.

This RINO probably paid for an abortion and now fears being outed. By any objective definition, human life begins at fecundation.

You're right. The good guys need to play this one smart.

Remember: BOTH SIDES are religious/worldview/faith positions, one secular-progressive antropocentric and one Judeo-Christian theocentric..
