Fired CBS "60 Minutes" producer Mary Mapes is still blaming the internet for ending her media career prematurely - or more precisely; the "vicious" bloggers who discovered that documents she unearthed in a bid to trash President Bush's National Guard service were forgeries.
"The criticism that was launched at us initially really came from the very conservative blogosphere, folks who are on these very conservative web sites," Mapes complained Friday on WVMT Vermont's "Charlie & Ernie" radio show.
"This was really a terribly vicious attack they launched on CBS," she insisted, before lamenting: "Politics is not necessarily the way it was when we all grew up, where you might disagree on something but you wouldn't eviscerate someone."
Mapes says that she was a victim of a new standard in journalism where "the truth doesn't matter" but instead it's "the perception of truth that matters."
"What happened to me, I think, and to all of us at CBS, was that the perception of truth became that these documents were not real; that there were flaws in the typeface and all kinds of sort of dry and extremely dull details about proportional spacing and superscript and all that."
Mapes said that she still believes the documents cited in the "60 Minutes II" broadcast by her boss, Dan Rather, were authentic, saying; "I feel that if they had been forged there would have been a flaw. And I have not been able to find the flaw."
She also noted that CBS's own internal investigation "could not prove that the documents were false."
Looks like somebody already has with an ugly stick.
"I sure wish everybody would use the right term...these documents were not FORGERIES. By definition, a forged document necessarily infers the existence of a REAL document, of which the forgery is a fradulent copy. Mary's 'documents' were FABRICATIONS, invented from whole cloth. A forged $20 is fake, but accurate. These things were the equivalent of a $7 dollar bill...they are INVENTIONS, not simply bogus copies of a legitimate government record."
A very good point. You are most correct, a forgery is a fake copy of a real thing, these were indeed fabrications, just plain old BS. Excellent point, and I haven't seen it made before.
Un-frakkin'-believable. Yes, those extremely dull details are the difference between truth and lies, Mary. But you didn't and really still don't even consider those little details important. Well, that's why the "bloggers" came down like an iron fist. You didn't even care if the documents were fake. Well, we're sick and tired of this kind of crap from the MSM and were not going to take it anymore.
You and The Dan got caught lying in an attempt to depose a sitting president. You deserve every morsel of the scorn and contempt you receive.
What Mapes meant to say is that she wasn't the victim but the perpetrator of the new standard. She must be suffering from the white is black and black is white syndrome.

Let me get this straight. Mapes & Rather spent FIVE YEARS tracking down an unsubstantiated rumor that George Bush went AWOL 30 years ago. When they couldn't find any evidence to support this rumor, they put forged documents on the air in a desperate attempt to smear the President of the United States. They got caught red-handed. And we're now supposed to think the people who exposed their fraud that are the bad guys who are out to "eviscerate" people just because we disagree with them??????
Mary Mapes is a sociopath.
She has not learned from her experience in which she got caught screwing society.
She needs psychological treatment wheter she wants it or not.

And as I read over these most excellent comments, I am nearly 100 percent sure that Mary Mopes most certainly is keeping up with FR and other conservative websites NOW, and you can bet your bottom dollar that she either has, is, or will be reading each and every one of these comments because she possesses an insatiable and insufferable ego, she has to know what people are saying about her, and she obviously has a Don Quioxte-like compulsion to try and prove something which is impossible to prove, something which has already been exposed as a fake, a fraud upon the American people.
She joins the ranks of other frauds, such as Janet Cooke and Jayson Blair, her name will be forever linked to a lie, a shameless and blatant attempt to interfere in the American political process, to try and get another fraud, John F'in Kerry of Massachusetts, into the White House.
20 years ago, she might have gotten away with it.
Now? She gets to spend the rest of her life moping about how the best laid plans of homely broads and egotistical anchors, finally went WAY astray.

Its truly amazing that such an OBVIOUS OBVIOUS OBVIOUS fake is the sort of thing that she would have nonchalantly passed off as the real McCoy.
Apparently forging source materials was just that simple in the past - and this time poor Mary was taken by surprise when her crap could not withstand even the slightest scrutiny.
Her manic sociopathy allows her - and her alone - to consider the details about her fake documents as trivial and boring.
Sociopath Mary needs our prayers.
Mapes will be upset to find out that she will NEVER match the level of journalistic fraud of the infamous Walter Duranty, the New York Slimes reporter who covered up Stalin's crimes and won the Pulitzer Prize for it.

She could get the Nobel Piece Prize - its such a joke now that this year could be a real tossup between the director of Brokeback Mountain and Brangela - and with Mapes in the mix she might steal it from them both. Hell, she might even be able to forge a few votes.
