Industry icons get connected

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA--Online gaming has been "the next big thing" for years now, and the success stories are beginning to show their impact on the industry. From Counter-Strike to World of Warcraft, breakthrough games are piling up, increasingly making some form of connectivity a mandatory feature for upcoming products.

"The entire video game industry's history thus far has been an aberration," Koster told the audience. "It has been a mutant monster only made possible by unconnected computers. People always play games together. All of you learned to play games with each other. When you were kids, you played tag, tea parties, cops and robbers, what have you. The single-player game is a strange mutant monster which has only existed for 21 years and is about to go away because it is unnatural and abnormal."

News on the VG front has been quiet for a while, so I thought I'd post this.

I think they're underselling the single-player game market. (Sony's representative, as usual, is the most off-the-wall with it). In the end, single player games can offer some experiences (like storytelling) that multiplayer games can't, so I wouldn't look for them to go away anytime soon.

He compares single-player games to masturbating?

Freud would love this guy.

In 1984 we were playing a game called "mtrek" ( a space game ) on a Berkley Unix VAX on terminals in different locations. Sad to say that game was better than the ones today.

I refuse to buy any game for my kids that has blood and 3D death and dismemberment or raping and pilaging as part of the "game".

Like, for example, Half Life. I really hate their multiplayer, but the single player storyline is second to none. Or Homeworld series.

Doom 3 is actually another good example. You had to play the game late at night, alone, in a dark room to get the full effect. Other people playing with you would have ruined it.

Yea, exactly! Like when my wife entered my cave, stood there literally next to me for 10 minutes waiting for me to realize she's there to give me a kiss goodnight, and then finally decided to put a hand on my shoulder...

I just about jumped out of my skin. Talking about other people ruining my experience. I had cold chills for another half an hour after that.

I have to agree. There are plenty of GOOD single player games out there. For times when you want to do whatever the heck you want in a world, you play San Andreas. When you want to socialize, you can play WoW. Both have their place.

I've played a gross amount of WoW, COH/COV, EQII, etc., and I still prefer to play a really good, 1P, game. Right now I spend more time on hte Nintendo DS than other platform (though I do go online with Animal Crossing somewhat regularly).

I spent hours with GT4. :-)

I finally broke down and bought a Vette partially from the fun I had in that game.

Online games are the future, and they are better than single player games. I've played games since the first Atari console, Pong on my TV, and Colossal Caverns on the PC. Multiplayer games are far more involving, more fun, and more challenging.

I am with you all the way on this one.

I got Call of Duty 2 for the PC for Xmas and played the Single Player from easy to hard.

Once that was done, I went on line.

What a difference it makes with real people, they are SOOOOO much sneakier !

Cheers,

Oh man I *looooooove* BF2. I fly the attack helo. Love it! Nothing like sneaking around hills stalking a tank or, even more exciting, an AA vehicle.

Yes, certainly no one is playing those silly 1 player games like The Sims or Grand Theft Auto. And I'm sure that my GTA experience would be greatly improved if only there was a player camped out at my starting location, constantly shooting me just as I log in.

Idiots. This is just another example of the idiots in the gaming industry playing "Follow the current trend of what's popular". FPS, RTS, FMV, GTA-clones, and now we're back to the "multi-player is the future" thing again. (Shakes head)

San Diego. Don't guess you'd have open port on your firewall for an "external" guest ?
