Mayor faults White House terror plot communication [LA's Villaraigosa]

Los Angeles -- Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said Thursday he was blindsided by President Bush's announcement of new details on a purported 2002 hijacking plot aimed at a downtown skyscraper, and described communication with the White House as "nonexistent."

"I'm amazed that the president would make this (announcement) on national TV and not inform us of these details through the appropriate channels," the mayor said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I don't expect a call from the president — but somebody."

The mayor also suggested that some funding from the Iraq war could be redirected to homeland security, which could be used for the protection of high-risk targets in Los Angeles. He did not advocate an immediate withdrawal of troops.

"I go to work every day knowing that we are a target," the mayor said.

Villaraigosa said he first learned of the information while watching Bush on TV, as he worked out Thursday morning.

The president has referred to the 2002 Los Angeles plot before, but until Thursday the White House had provided only a vague description of what was planned.

Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks who was captured in 2003, had already begun planning the West Coast operation in October 2001, just after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Bush said Thursday during a Washington speech.

He did not advocate an immediate withdrawal of troops.

Has L.A. been occupied?

Not a direct quote, so maybe the article writer thinks the city has troops in it. Or maybe the writer just thinks this is something appropriate for a mayor to talk about any time he happens to speak in public.

I am sure the proper LA authorities were aware of this.

I'm not 100% sure that would have been the case. Once the LA threat was neutralized, any airing of it might have limited our ability to stop other threats by compromising the sources and methods used.

All: There is some confusion on this thread. What he is objecting to is not that he wasn't notified 3 years ago but that he as Mayor now wasn't notified prior to Bush announcing this. Perhaps Bush's staff should have thought of that as a courtesy. OK. I'll concede that. But announcing now that he wasn't in the loop today prior to Bush's announcement makes him look even worse.
I'm surprised he would admit it he is so unimportant that he wasn't contacted.

Dems have become the Whinocrat Party.

1) He wasn't mayor at the time

2) The LA FBI office, the LAPD and even the building owner were all alerted to the possibility that the building could be targeted days after 9/11. See: Article dated Apr 2004 -Post #100

3) Los Angeles received 65 million in DHS funds during the fiscal year 2005 under the Homeland Security Grant Program and Urban Areas Security Initiative. See DHS Website. They come third on the funding list behind New York and WDC.

""I go to work every day knowing that we are a target," the mayor said."

OK... Why are you surprised? Not sure why he is acting surprised about something he acknowledges is an every day possibility.

I remember FR discussing this, so thanks for the link to an article. Odd Sheppard at FNC didn't bring this up but went along with the "never hear it" crowd.

Antonio R. Villaraigosa is the 41st mayor of Los Angeles. He was elected on May 17, 2005 and sworn in to office on July 1, 2005.

That's not his point. His point is to make Bush and his administration look like fools and sneaky bastards.

I can only assume that the previous mayor was notifed. Who cares about this moron.

"Sen. John Kerry endorsed Villaraigosa at an April 30 appearance by the two at Los Angeles Valley Community College. Villaraigosa served as a vice chairperson for Kerry’s 2004 bid to defeat George W. Bush.

The Kerry endorsement added to a growing list of progressive and liberal leaders supporting Villaraigosa, including Reps. Maxine Waters and Henry Waxman, both Democrats in Congress, and Los Angeles City Council President Alex Padilla."

Are you trying to be personally offensive here? I don't normally get "huffy" but in your case I may make an exception.

p.s. I agree with the spirit of what you said, just wish you didn't have to bash women alongside DEMONRATS.

The West Coast plot isn't exactly a new revelation. The Mayor must not have a very good attention span.

Hey, Antonio:

'Sears Tower was next on Qaeda list'
The Times of India ^ | March 30 2004

WASHINGTON: Chicago's Sears Tower and Los Angeles' Library Tower were to be the next targets after the terrorist attacks on World Trade Centre and the Pentagon, Al-Qaeda's puported operations chief Khalid Shiekh Mohammed now in detention, has told US interrogators, media reports said on Tuesday.

The plan for Chicago and Los Angeles were aborted because of the decisive US response to the New York and Washington attacks, Sheikh reportedly told the investigators, the Washington Times said quoting a British newspaper.

The US response disrupted the terrorist organisations' plans so thoroughly that it could not proceed, he said.
