Fear of death factors into how we vote (Voters preferred Kerry in 04, but OBL made them switch)

Rutgers University scientists say their research suggests some people voted for George W. Bush rather than John Kerry because of concerns about death.

Florette Cohen, a graduate student in social psychology and Daniel Ogilvie, a psychology professor, used research based on the 2004 presidential election. They found voters in a "psychologically benign state of mind" preferred Kerry to Bush, but Bush was more popular than Kerry after voters received a subtle reminder of death.

Citing an Osama bin Laden tape that became public a few days before the election, the researchers say many Americans' unconscious concerns about death resulted in some people being scared into voting for Bush.

The researchers collaborated with professors Sheldon Solomon of Skidmore College, Jeff Greenberg at the University of Arizona and Tom Pyszczynski at the University of Colorado.

The study appears in the journal Analyses of Social Issues and Public Policy.

Got to say I prefer this one to the "stolen election" theme. That one was beginning to get boring.

I was psychologically benign before I was fearful of terrorists.

No, it makes sense. When Americans were reminded of the importance of security, they DIDN'T trust Kerry. Think of it this way, if they voted for Kerry, they voted for their own death, therefore they voted for Bush.

"They found voters in a "psychologically benign state of mind" preferred Kerry to Bush". I haven't seen a psychologically benign democrat in years. They're psychologically unhinged.

LOL. It's always someone (or something) else's fault they lost. What a distorted view of the universe. NEVER anything they do is responsible for their failure(s).

So Kerry's waffling on a multitude of profound differences in ideology had nothing to do with it? His constant wishy-washy attitudes about national defense. His apparent elitism and disdain of all things common had nothing to do with it? It was all because we're afraid of Osama? Sounds like a few professors at Rutgers need to get out more.

What a load of poop!

On the other hand, even the left-wing extremists are starting to admit to a survival instinct.

For me, Jesus has taken care of the death thing. I voted for Bush because I preferred not to have the country turned over to a pompous idiot.

I do not think it was death but trust. I really had trouble with kerry until I felt he could not win. Why do people trust a traitor anyway?

They're still unable to understand why they lost, and continue to grasp for one all-encompassing reason. They don't realize it was more than 1 reason... their candidate did nothing in the Senate (8 bills in a 20 year career), he couldn't make a decision if his life depended upon it, had less personality than a cigar-store indian but less colorful, has no answers, etc etc etc.

Translation: J'FnK's inability to convince voters he was anything but a fraud when it came to issues of national security was one of the factors that cost him the election.

Old news

What a useless study.

Dims just can't get it into their puny minds that they were rejected because they are the loony left.

Kerry lost because he failed to sacrifice enough gamebirds during the campaign. The gods were displeased.

Actually for me it wasn't fear of death.

It was the story Kerry told about how he flew an Israeli fighter upside down over Israel and could see the Gaza Strip "and all the lines contained", when the owner of the jet did not know if Kerry could fly until he handed over the stick at wheels-up.

Plus, to make the story work, he had "his" flight suit with him.

Guess what Bush did a few days before this speech of Kerry's?
