Smoking Could Be Banned In All Public Places
(AP) SPRINGFIELD, Ill. Smokers, beware.
Illinois lawmakers are considering a statewide ban on smoking in public places, like restaurants, bars and bowling alleys.
Health advocates say smokers shouldn't inflict their smoke on employees and other customers.
One expert says a waitress who breathes second-hand smoke for eight hours has essentially smoked a pack of cigarettes.
But business groups oppose a ban. They say customers can vote with their feet and choose whether to go to places that allow smoking.
They also note that it was just a few months ago that lawmakers let individual cities decide whether to ban smoking. They say that process should be given more time.
A House health care committee approved the bill six-to-four, sending it to the full House.
BTW...VIRGINIA just voted down the state wide smoking ban! WooHoo!
That's fine.
BTW, a bill to ban smoking in Virginia was defeated in the state senate today.
The current Surgeon General appointed by GW, is going to push for a federal ban on smoking.
Everything is in the favor of the anti-smokers now and has been for a long time. The handwriting is on the wall in my humble opinion.
Smokers may eventually win out, but not before smoking is completely banned, like Alcohol during prohibition.
The fight is not yet totally over.
Did you see the vote?
YEAS--Bell, Blevins, Colgan, Devolites Davis, Edwards, Herring, Howell, Locke, Lucas, Marsh, Miller, O'Brien, Potts, Puller, Quayle, Saslaw, Ticer, Whipple--18.

NOT VOTING--Rerras--1.
Is Rule 36 the vote for reconsideration of the defeat?????
Bump for later reference.
Actually that is easier to defeat than the piecemeal means they are working under now.
Dang! I don't know about rule 36 and have no time to look into it now. I only heard about it on the radio after Rush. A brief happy thought is still better than none I guess.
I agree.
I'll try to find out what it is.
Now I have to find out why my Senator voted against it.
ILLINOIS
Where we tell you how you're going to live AND YOU LIKE IT!!
Where did you get that? Do you have a link?
How do you believe it will be easier to defeat a Federal ban?
I recently caught the tail end of an interview with him on TV. He is an arrogant know it all and very proud of his anti-smoking position. And apparently not at all afraid to use his power and influence to foist his will on the rest of us.
I appreciate your kind comments.
The opinion on fighting a federal ban comes from many sides..........there are a limited number of people to contact. It's more likely people would be willing to contact one congressman, for example in Delaware the lone congressman will be getting calls from smoekrs and owners statewide, as opposed to when the list of people calling state lawmakers was diluted by 41 districts.
Additionally, there have been some questions raised about the legality of such a move, but I'm not a lwayer so don't care to comment on that, and finally in that venue all of the disinformation of the antis would be held up to much more detailed scrutiny, because our side would finally get a larger arena (meaning media coverage) in which to make the various points.
I'll leave with one stat I heard today, which you probably already know but I will repeat for the beneift of the lurkers. 2/3 of smokers die of causes UNrelated to smoking.
My Senator voted for it. It was introduced by Bell, R. I scanned this thing (I'm really rushed) and am not sure what is going on.

Okay, thanks. I will check him out.
Thank you for reminding me of that statistic.
It's been nice chatting with you.
I was wrong, mine did not vote for it - he was the oone that abstained from voting.
I'm in the same boat as you are, I'm just as rushed - I've got to be out of here in less than an hour.......i will catch up with you later.
Thanks
Oh I'm sorry! But I think it's just good sense to wear a life jacket when your in a boat. It's just common sense.
Hope I didn't piss you off!!
