Smoking Could Be Banned In All Public Places

(AP) SPRINGFIELD, Ill. Smokers, beware.

Illinois lawmakers are considering a statewide ban on smoking in public places, like restaurants, bars and bowling alleys.

Health advocates say smokers shouldn't inflict their smoke on employees and other customers.

One expert says a waitress who breathes second-hand smoke for eight hours has essentially smoked a pack of cigarettes.

But business groups oppose a ban. They say customers can vote with their feet and choose whether to go to places that allow smoking.

They also note that it was just a few months ago that lawmakers let individual cities decide whether to ban smoking. They say that process should be given more time.

A House health care committee approved the bill six-to-four, sending it to the full House.

"One expert says a waitress who breathes second-hand smoke for eight hours has essentially smoked a pack of cigarettes."

Maybe they should tax her for the free smoke.

Anyone from Illinois knew this was coming. In Springfield they just banned smoking, it will take affect in 2007. The city of Springfield is busy trying to get the county they are in to ban smoking also. Springfield city officials are afraid smokers will spend their money in the county and not the city. This state ban is basically the same thing, all places that have banned smoking have watched their smoking patrons spend their money where they could smoke. The city of Springfield is also trying to ban smoking in private clubs.

It's a damn shame that the waitress can only work in a smoking environment..she could work at a smoke free workplace, but her children are being held hostage and thus she is forced to work in an evil smoking restaurant..the horror..

Well, they certainly get wild-eyed and drooly whenever they think about increasing the taxes on cigarettes. The governor doesn't even bring up health concerns anymore when talking about an increase. He sells it as a cure for budget woes.

So I guess the state is really dependent on smokers' buying cigarettes. It just doesn't like smokers to smoke them.

What ever happened to hazard pay? Give them an extra dime an hour. I used to work at a power plant and when ever someone had to work on the smoke stack they got hazard pay because of the height of the stack. People used to fight over who got to go up, we all wanted the extra money.

Most wait staff I know, I have waited my fair share of tables, prefer to work in smoking sections, they claim smokers tip better........plus a lot of them are also smokers themselves.

Not quite. After all, they can't tax what they ban. Of course, where someone can smoke is highly regulated here in CA.

You can still smoke outside in CA, except in Berkely, and in your own home. Many rentals ban smoking.

I suspect this will end up like poker machines in small bars. The bartender will only pay out if he knows you, other wise the machines are just there for fun.

Well thank goodness the government is going to ride in on the white charger and save them all, as this is clearly the most pressing issue facing this country! /s

In your own house, maybe in apartments/condos, in the trunk of your car, in your garage, and maybe a few other places. You can also smoke any place outside as long as no one is around to see you. Places like that.
