Muslim protesters infuriated by cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad raised the diplomatic stakes last night as Iran's best-selling newspaper announced it would retaliate by running images satirising the Holocaust.

The decision by the rightwing Hamshari daily to launch an international competition to find the most suitable caricatures came as demonstrators hurled firebombs and stones at the Danish embassy in Tehran and the Iranian government imposed a formal trade ban on Danish imports. Last night mobs were attempting to storm the Danish compound.(...)

Hey! It's the Guardian. No bias there. As far left as a paper can get. It makes the NYT look far right.

They always run cartoons satirizing Jews so what difference does it make. I guess they are doing that because Jews are an easier target than Danes. They just need to go to the achieves and pick among the thousands of offensive images they have already published over the years.

Naw, the real meaning here is that they do have a nuke and they feel equal to Israel. They are trying to pick a fight they think they can win.

Well, some newspapers (for example a certain french newspaper) go a bit (albeit not much) further left than that:

Anyone want to put money on the notion that Jews the world over will NOT start burning embassies and killing people in retaliation for these cartoons? Guess what, editorial staff of Hamshari, all this exercise is going to do is once again highlight the difference between civilized men and savages.

Typical/ They're mad at the Danes, so they'll punish the Jews.

Sweet, now Israel can go on a bombing spree with impunity from the MSM - we will hear how since Israelis were offended, we must understand that they have the right to show their displeasure.

Just a sec, one more sip of coffee and I'll wake up in reality.

A joke I never forgot goes something like this-

A duck and a scorpion were at the side of a river in the middle east. The scorpion said " Take me on your back across the river."

The duck replied "That's crazy, you'll sting me if I have any contact with you!"

The scorpion said "Think about it, if I do that you'll sink and we'll both drown."

After some time, the duck agreed and took the scorpion on his back. Half-way acros the river, the scorpion stung the duck.

"You fool" said the duck, "now we'll both die."

"Yes but this is the middle east" replied the scorpion.

I think it does. And, we can declare war on the middle east and vow to destroy them and kill all non-infidels

A lot of people will look at this as a sort of "tit for tat:" you publish cartoons that make us mad, so we'll publish ones that make you mad. But the two aren't the same.

The Danish cartoons were attacking a religion.
The Iranian cartoons will be attacking people.

It's a subtle but important difference. In my mind, at least, religion and politics, or even religious and political figures, are fair game for criticism. But entire groups of people should be spared this sort of thing. The fact that the Iranians can't distinguish between mocking a religion (an idea) and mocking an ethnicity (living human beings) just goes to show how little they understand what free speech and debate really mean.

So, what is the retaliation of the injured parites due to the rioting Muslims? Isn't this double retaliation?
