A LESBIAN couple has become the first in the British army to tie the knot under the country's new civil partnership laws.
Sonya Gould, 19, and Vanessa Haydock, 18, both privates in the Royal Logistics Corps, exchanged vows before friends and family at the register office in Chippenham, Wiltshire in the west of England, The Sun newspaper reported today.
"It was wonderful to get married and being the first was the icing on the cake. We want to be together forever," said Haydock, pictured in The Sun kissing Gould in uniform albeit not smack on the lips.
While they are the first homosexual couple in the British army to get hitched, they are not the first in the armed forces, after two Royal Air Force women sealed their civil partnership before Christmas last year.
"As an equal opportunities employer, the armed forces seeks to reflect the diverse community it serves," said a spokesman for the Ministry of Defence, which until February 2000 banned gays and lesbians from the armed services.
"We are pleased that serving personnel who are registered in a same-sex relationship now have equal rights to those enjoyed by married couples."
Same-sex civil partnerships became possible on December 5 last year when a law came into force allowing gay and lesbian couples to obtain the same rights as heterosexuals in areas such as employment, pension and inheritance.
Do they get to share a foxhole?
"Do they get to share a foxhole?"
Yeah, two of them.
Yeah, I know..and can you watch...
How special. HURL
Oh, oh, oh, I read it, they are in the army.
Nevermind. very dry sarcasm
An 18 year old marrying a 19 year old. Yeah, they'll be together forever.
Hey man... forever is relative!
Bareback Foxhole
Ha ha ha ha
Love you forever baby!!!!!
Are you sure it not just what's left of the Highland Regiments in kilts?
Whatever happened to don't ask, don't tell?
It's been replaced with "It pays to advertise"!
I'm wondering why no homosexual male military couples have signed up to get married?
Maybe Rule 1 applies...
Odd. I thought the military was a government arm responsible for defending the nation and causing great destruction upon their enemies. Devotion to diversity cannot help achieve those ends, and they can certainly hinder the attempts to do so.
They're decomposing what's left of the British military. Enlistment numbers will fall there, and/or the quality of recruits will fall.
i wonder if the London bookies have a wager on how long the union will last?
LOL, at first I thought that said Lebanese...oops!
<< Those poms are in a bad way... >>
Those poms are WAY past "a bad way ..."
Those poms are ROOTED.
[But not in the normal, God-given, way]
[Aussie Dictionary: "Americans be particularly careful with this one which has nothing to do with offering encouragement to your team [My Broncos] - but describes the fundamentally biological act that results in the procreation of the species."
They may have a shot at being the first the divorce under the new law !
