New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin testified before Congress again Wednesday on the response to Hurricane Katrina.
Nagin answered questions on what the city needs from the federal government to continue the cleanup process. He told them that New Orleans' greatest needs are temporary housing and help for small businesses.
On Tuesday the committee looked at documents that showed Nagin opened up the Convention Center but failed to provide enough food and water. On Wednesday the committee asked more questions about the incident.
Sen. Susan Collins of Maine told Nagin, "We can't find any evidence of a request from the city or from the state to FEMA to get supplies to the Convention Center," to which Nagin replied, "With all due respect to Secretary [Michael] Chertoff and Mr. [Mike] Brown, I don't understand how anyone in authority with this type of crisis could say that they were not aware."
Gov. Kathleen Blanco will also testify before the congressional committee on Thursday.
I saw a brief clip of Nagin on the news earlier and he was saying the communications were terrible and he could not get ahold of the Feds to send buses. Of course we all know Nagin had plenty of buses.
Oompa..Oompa...zippity doo...I want some money...how about you? Oompa..OOmmpa..whoopity doo.
It was not a matter of being aware, it was a matter of proper procedure and delegated responsibility. There is considerable evidence that the local and state governments had more concern for political motives than the safety and comfort of their citizens.
chocolate city baby yahhhhhh!!!!
A lack of leadership, mis-management, corruption and lots of poor folk made for a very bad combination.
Whats amazingly foolish are attempts to lure folks back to New Orleans.
This is a hoot on several levels.
Nagin acts like NOLA was the only place that was impacted by Katrina.
And, guess what? FEMA partners the Red Cross and the Salvation Army showed up in NOLA with food and water. And they were turned away ... by the state DHS.
As I said, the Louisiana investigation won't go well for the rat.

But he couldn't use those buses because they didn't have bathrooms. Nagin said so himself.
And everyone knows that before Karl Rove steered the hurricane into New Orleans and blew up the levees, he hung "Whites Only" signs on every restroom at every gas station and rest stop on every possible evacuation route out of the city, just to make sure the blacks were hopelessly trapped to die.
About a year before the hurricane , New Orleans and Louisianna received millions of dollars in Homeland security money. Has anyone ever found out where it dissappeared too? They sure didnt buy any hurricane supplies with it. Maybe thats how Nagin made the down payment on his Texas home.
I tried to calculate ratio his brain power to the amount of brain power it takes to remember for 24 hours. I failed with a divide by zero error.
Maybe the levee board used it to upgrade the home theater system and the bar on their private jet.
I think he may be lactose intolerant. That is why he is blowing so much hot air in DC.
exactly!
If you know NOLA politics... you know about how corrupt the levee board is.
When they evacuated for Ivan it took over 12 hours to get to Baton Rouge from NOLA. There are not many bathrooms along the way because there is a lot of swamp lands in between. Also several older people died from dehydration due to the length of time they were on those non air conditioned buses. However, Nagin should have at least utilized the buses he had.
