The Americans have been watching Chelsea Clinton's stormy private life for a rather long period already. Living in the White House and studying in elite universities could all be made null and void after the father's confession of adultery in a televised addressed to the nation.
The parents carefully kept the daughter out of the public eye. Chelsea moved into the White House on the day of her father's inauguration on January 20, 1993 when she was 12 years old. And she looked very much awkward against the background of Albert Gore's pretty fidgety daughters. Chelsea had braces on and was a plump girl. One of Republican reporters said: "Everyone knows the Clintons have a cat, Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is also a White House dog?", and pointed to a video monitor that switched to a picture of Chelsea. But that was the only attack of the kind.
The Clintons concluded a non-aggression pact with journalists, and nobody in the White House dared to break the order not to answer any questions concerning Chelsea Clinton. When Bill Clinton became the President of the United States, Hillary Clinton even went to New York to talk to Jaqueline Kennedy about upbringing children in the White House. Jackie gave the first lady of the USA a useful recommendation saying that the public life of the president and his wife had nothing in common with their daughter's life.
The Clintons's provincial life in Arkansas radically differed from the life in the White House. Bill Clinton was already holding the governor post in Arkansas when his daughter came to the world in 1980. The parents explained to their daughter at her early age that people all the time would inevitably cover the father's name in mud, and the girl knew that politics involved various methods including very unpleasant ones. Chelsea was twelve when Bill Clinton's ex-mistress made some public confessions during his first preelection campaign. The girl treated the situation calmly and did not go into hysteric. People say that was possible only because the girl felt perfectly well the adoration of the parents toward her. For Bill Clinton, Chelsea turned out to be the only female creature whom he sincerely loved. At the same time, Hillary was rather a friend and a reliable companion to the daughter.
Hillary's cast of mind is analytical; she reveals the iron will and exorbitant pride. She is not used to losing, and obviously this character trait helped her keep the marriage with Bill Clinton stable although it never was ideal.
Hillary is a staunch feminist which in its turn determined her basic upbringing principles. She did not let the daughter indulge in the traditional girls' games when they try mothers' dresses and do their first makeup. On the contrary, when Chelsea was seven years old her mother told her how the exchange worked so that the girl could know more about the adult life. And exchange bulletins turned out to be very interesting for Chelsea.
When the Clintons moved to the White House, Chelsea attended a closed private school and a ballet studio, certainly accompanied with her bodyguards. Sometimes, she invited friends to the White House where they played bowling and watched movies in the White House cinema. If by chance children strewed some pop-corn, Hillary asked the daughter to put the place in order. Jackie Kennedy told Hillary that it is important to teach children to be independent in the White House and do not wait when servants would serve them.
The Clintons realized well that Chelsea played a very important role in their complicated family relations. The daughter was the doubtless part that made their marriage durable.
Chelsea came out to the public during Clinton's second preelection campaign. This time she was a calm nice girl as self-confident as her mother and as friendly and nice as her father. Ballet classes made her figure slender. Chelsea took part in several official events and at the inauguration ball. But still, the issue of the president's daughter was still a taboo for journalists.
In April 1995, Chelsea made what some called a "debut" to the national media when she joined her mother on a highly publicized tour of the Indian subcontinent. The press gave her positive reviews, noting her intelligence and compassion (talking at length about the history of Islam and holding babies at Mother Teresa's convent).
After leaving school, Chelsea entered Stanford University in Northern California 3,000 miles away from Washington. This is a typical story for American families when children leave their homes at age 16-17 to enter higher schools. But the daughter's departure turned out to be a severe blow for Hillary and Bill. They still hoped Chelsea would choose some higher school close to the White House. But Chelsea wanted to escape the parental surveillance.
In September 1997, Chelsea arrived to Stanford University. Even though it was publicly stated she wanted to study medicine, Chelsea chose history. Security kept a distance and did not interfere in Chelsea's private life during her university studies.
Mathew Pierce, a student of religion from Texas, was Chelsea's first official boyfriend in Stanford.
It was the end of her first year of studies at Stanford University when the Lewinski scandal broke out. At first, Bill Clinton assured the nation that Monica's indictment was a fake. Chelsea believed the father because she knew that many foes were making attempts to destroy his career. Mathew abandoned Chelsea because of the investigation launched against his girl's father. Chelsea was depressed but the experience helped her stand another severe blow when several months later the president publicly confessed he had had an affair with Miss Lewinski. At that time, Chelsea Clinton experienced mixed emotions of humiliation and delight with her father.
Stanford student Jeremy Kane, 21, was another Chelsea's boyfriend who gave rise to much talk. The young man was interested in politics, and probably this interest was too strong and obvious that it seemed he was keeping relations with Chelsea to be admitted into the world of high politics. Even though Bill Clinton liked the young man, Chelsea's feelings toward Jeremy died down and they parted.
Chelsea graduated from Stanford University with a degree in history in 2001; her undergraduate thesis was on her father's mediation of the 1998 Northern Ireland peace agreement. She went on to earn a Master's degree at University College, Oxford University, in International relations.
In Oxford, Chelsea decided to behave the way she had never done before. In other words, she wanted to behave absolutely improperly. It seemed to be quite a relief for her to give up the refined lady image. The new freedom helped Chelsea realize that she liked fashion, glamour and going around with celebrities.
Chelsea had a press secretary who made a high-society schedule for her so that the daughter of the US president could attend every prestigious party in London and in the outskirts, go to see every premiere or fashion show. Soon, high society receptions and meetings with celebrities became daily routine for Chelsea.
Chelsea's escapades in England caused storms of cheers in the US because Americans anticipated more transformations of the president's daughter. Soon after the tragic death of "the American Prince" John Kennedy-Jr. In 1999, Vanity Fair called Chelsea Clinton the new American Princess.
Bill Clinton understood that the daughter wanted to enjoy her life and approved of her wish, but Hillary did not like at all Chelsea's transformations. She feared that her daughter would become a high-society girl like Paris Hilton (pictures).
Hillary Clinton was particularly apprehensive of the increasing influence of Chelsea's new boyfriend Ian Klaus. The young man played a very important role in the metamorphoses of the president's daughter. Chelsea called him the love of her life. Ian was a talented student and a football player, an heir of one of California's richest families. His looks resembled the young Bill Clinton. Psychologists stated that after the Lewinski scandal it would be quite natural that Chelsea might seek a man resembling her father. Ian loved to be in the public's focus and encouraged his girl for publicity. It was owing to Ian that Chelsea knew sex, love and alcohol for the first time. From time to time, Chelsea left bars and clubs being dead drunk. It was rumored that if Chelsea stuck to that behavior line she would become an alcoholic. At that period, Chelsea and Ian were inseparable and it seemed they were going to get married.
But Chelsea Clinton did not marry Ian Klaus. After graduating from Oxford in 2003, she joined consulting company McKinsey and Company in New York City, reportedly earning a six-figure salary. The relations with Ian Klaus went to pieces.
In October 2005, Chelsea Clinton appeared in public with a new boyfriend. Marc Mezvinsky, the son of ex-senator from Iowa and former Stanford student seems to be a good match for the daughter of the ex-president. Indeed, they have much in common and even their reputations seem to be similar. Now, Chelsea has a chance to gain revenge, turn into a happy princess and obtain a quick promotion the way her mother did. Otherwise, the name Clinton will forever be only the synonym of her father's adultery.

Not for me! Anytime I think of the name "Clinton" regardless of who it's associated with I think of 8 miserable years of scandal, bombings, adulterous affairs, morally-lacking and ethically-challenged people and dead people. Hope that I never have to see another clintoon in the White House.

Mezvinsky was not a senator from Iowa. He was in the House. Further, he is currently in prison for fraud.
So Bill's legacy is left up to good ol' Webb and his mumpless glands.
