Florida Rep.'s Wife Says She Was Ejected From State Of Union

The wife of Rep. C.W. Bill Young, R-Indian Shores, told a newspaper that she was ejected during the State of the Union address for wearing a T-shirt that says, "Support the Troops Defending Our Freedom."

Beverly Young told the St. Petersburg Times that she was sitting in the front row of the House gallery Tuesday night when she was approached by someone who told her she needed to leave.

She said she reluctantly agreed, but argued with several officers in an outside hallway.

In a telephone interview with the newspaper, Young said she told them her shirt wasn't a protest but a message of support.

Capitol Police Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said Young wasn't ejected from the gallery and she left on her own. She couldn't provide additional details.

Young's husband found out about the incident after Bush's speech and called it unacceptable.

No matter what the shirt said, did she really believe a t-shirt was appropriate for the State of the Union speech?

What ever happened to dressing nicely for such an event? Some people have no class and are apparently proud of it.

Your wife wearing a t-shirt to the State of the Union speech is unacceptable.

Some people just have no sense of proper decorum. I can appreciate that she wants to show support to the troops, but a T-Shirt at the SOTU??? Not the brightest bulb in the chandelier.

Just goes to show that the law was being applied in a content-neutral manner.

Proper attire is required at a State of the Union address and a T shirt is hardly classified as proper attire, what part doesn't she understand, secondly the T shirt was making a statement and I believe there are rules against making statements whether they be pro or con.

Rep Bill Nelson(R) Florida just told the same story on the House floor about 20 minutes ago. What gives?

Hillary probably approved it because the DLC wants Sheehan to go away now.

The SOTU is no place for personal declarations and slogans. She should have been removed.

It was the State of the Union Speech .. not a rally and T-shirts for or against is not the place to wear it

Quite right. It's not appropriate and I believe it is against House rules.

How about wearing a nice dress to the SOTU?

Reminds me of folks who wear hats while INSIDE a restaurant. Its a one thing if its Mickey-D's, but another if its Smith and Wollensky.

Exactly.

Men should be in suits and ties, and women should dress in the same manner.

NO ONE should be allowed in the building without being appropriately dressed, EVER.

Exactly. A nice "Support our Troops" pin on a dress lapel would have been more appropriate.
