France enters Muslim cartoon row

A French newspaper has reproduced a set of caricatures depicting the Prophet Muhammad that have caused outrage in the Muslim world.

France Soir said it had published the cartoons to show that "religious dogma" had no place in a secular society.

Their original publication in a Danish paper last September has led to boycotts and protests against Denmark in several Arab nations.

Islamic tradition bans depictions of the Prophet Muhammad or Allah.

Under the headline "Yes, we have the right to caricature God", the paper ran a front page cartoon of Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim and Christian gods floating on a cloud.

It shows the Christian deity saying: "Don't complain, Muhammad, we've all been caricatured here."

The full set of Danish drawings, some of which depict the Prophet Muhammad as a terrorist, were printed on the inside pages.

Bomb threat

The paper said it had decided to republish them "because no religious dogma can impose itself on a democratic and secular society".

The global controversy the cartoons have provoked "has done nothing to maintain balance and mutual limits in democracy, respect of religious beliefs and freedom of expression", it added.

There was no immediate reaction from Muslim leaders in France, which is home to the largest Islamic minority in Europe.

The offices of the Danish newspaper that first published the caricatures, Jyllands-Posten, had to be evacuated on Tuesday because of a bomb threat.

The paper had apologised a day earlier for causing offence to Muslims, although it maintained it was legal under Danish law to print them.

Ministers from 17 Arab countries on Tuesday urged Denmark's government to punish Jyllands-Posten for what they described as an "offence to Islam".

Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen welcomed the paper's apology but defended the freedom of the press.

The images' publication in Denmark has provoked diplomatic sanctions and threats from Islamic militants across the Muslim world.

Thousands of Palestinians demonstrated this week in the Gaza Strip, burning Danish flags and portraits of the Danish prime minister.

Saudi Arabia has recalled its ambassador to Denmark, while Libya said it was closing its embassy in Copenhagen and Iraq summoned the Danish envoy to condemn the cartoons.

I had the same thought. Have every newspaper in every western nation reproduce the cartoons. Are the going to blow up the entire world? Instead of kowtowing to these clowns, they should be given the same treatment as has been given to the Christians and Jews. Saying that the Muslim God cannot be shown in a cartoon - to me - says this is not the same God of Abraham but something else entirely. Something that cannot stand being rediculed.

Just when many have replaced their burnt out cars with new ones...

Maybe not. They burned all the dealerships too.

The entire world should publish mohammad toons in support of free speech.

If intolerant RoPers had not made such a big deal about it in the first place, it would have been a non-issue from the beginning.

The best answer is have the world awash in depictions of mohammad to show them we will not kowtow to aspects of their sharia law.

Let them learn to deal with it in the same way they have to deal with us eating pork, drinking alcohol and not making our women live inside tents.

"Zombie's Mohammed Image Archive"

Cool. The first one, from 1789, refers to Mahomet the Impostor!

zombie does the work the Jackal Pack Press claims to do, but does not.

I highly recommend everyone take a look at all of his pictures and commentary, especially the "breasts not bombs" and the Scrotum Inflator. ( Obviously, it's Adult-Rated, but this is what sort of adveraries we are faced with. )

Once again the Mudslimes show their abiding, bitter hatred for the most basic human freedom. Once again, here's a link to the cartoons:

http://www.di2.nu/files/Muhammed_Cartoons_Jyllands_Posten.html

This link loads slowly but is worth the wait because all of the cartoons are in English. Just in case representatives of the ROP manage to shut it down, here's another link to another source, but some of the cartoons are in Danish:

Maybe some of these secular huminists have figured out that "The enemy(Islam) of my Enemy(Christians), really _isn't_ my friend" and perhaps even further that maybe Christians really aren't so bad afterall. It's not like you see Catholic Altar boys torching Citroen's every night.

What you say is precisely why I have been posting links to the full set of cartoons every time an article on this issue is posted here. The Mudslimes must realize that, the more they try to supress free speech, the more often the full set of cartoons will be posted here and elswhere.

Lots of folks here seem to be congratulating "France" or the "French". This is nothing of the kind. It is ONE NEWSPAPER.. one courageous and enlightened newspaper... but ONE NEWSPAPER ONLY.

It is not "France" the government, nor France the mass of citizenry. There may be a superstrong anti-clerical and secularist tone to French society (the head scarf ban), but there is an even stronger appeasement mentality there.

How soon before Monsieur Chirac offers his heartfelt apologies to Muslims for upsetting them with these cartoons? How soon before French Muslims start torching whole neighborhoods again? How soon before the white-flag French back down and make kissy-pooh with the Muslim blackmailers?

If the government and mainstream French media stand up and support the newspaper in question, and stand up for free speech and a free press in the face of Muslim threats, THEN I will start to be impressed.
