Kenyans are 'insulted' by dog food offer

A New Zealand businesswoman has provoked outrage in Kenya by promising to ship 42 tons of dog food mix to feed starving children.
"It is immoral. It is unacceptable," said John Munyes, Kenya's special programmes minister, who is co-ordinating the response to the drought that has put up to four million people at risk of starvation. He added: "I am offended. It is demeaning."
Christine Drummond, a pet-food manufacturer, said she planned to send Kenya 6,000 emergency packs of Mighty Mix dog biscuit containing freeze-dried pork, beef, chicken and mutton as well as flax seed, green-lipped mussels and deer velvet.
Mrs Drummond claims to eat it herself and says she gives it to her children.
"I sprinkle it on my porridge in the morning, and also on my lunch or tea, and it just gives me that wee pick-up," she told The Press newspaper in Canterbury, New Zealand.
Kenya has declared a national disaster because of food shortages which followed poor rains.
I find it insulting to dogs to let Kenyans eat THEIR food!!
If I'm not mistaken, didn't the UN or Oxfam give some starving African country a few years back a cheap, edible, high-carb and protein rich foodstuff similar to this? I believe P.J. O'Rourke referred to it as "Famine-Chow."
And as the Kenyans say, "I'll die before I eat dog food".
They could label it hash and they would die fighting over it.
This may be un-pc, but how does that old saying go?
Beggars can't be choosers.
Some people are too proud to accept charity, and other people are too proud to accept charity that isn't brand spanking new in the wrapper.
Let them eat insects and bark instead.
If I were starving (and it's a well-known and all too obvious fact that I'm not), I'd sure eat it. I find it real hard to get "offended" on an empty stomach.
Gives them strength when they need to sprint.
Me and my pup love Flint River Ranch...
I looked up the dog food, looks like it's pretty good quality--none of this 80% corn meal crap. Under the circumstances I think I'd accept it with as little publicity as possible.
"Famine Chow" is a mix of sorghum, wheat, sometimes rice, and various legumes. If they are lucky it also sometimes is coated with molasses. I'm thinking this could kick off a Kenyan-New Zealand War. Which might be the funniest war ever. Two peoples completely incapable of getting at each other. The New Zealanders might just surrender.
Fascinating to see this thread developing into a "Why can't they eat dog food?" discussion. Very interesting.....so Kenyans have no right to object when somebody offers to feed them pet food (even as aid)?
Guess anything is okay in the name of charity.
I feed my cats Wellness cat food. If I were starving, I'd sure as heck eat that stuff.
They have the right to object if they like, I just don't think it's necessarily wise to.
Just when I thought I read everything on this website.
During the East Africa famine of 1980-81, the US sent yellow corn meal to Kenya. Kenyans are used to white corn meal, "ugali", used to make the staple food dish, "posho". Why, they asked, was this relief maize meal yellow in color?
Rumors soon were flying saying that the yellow color was due to contraceptives being added to the maize meal. After all, aren't the Western nations always telling us to reduce our birthrate?
As a result, none of our workers would eat the yellow meal. We tried telling them that we had been eating yellow cornbread all our lives, and had four children! The "contraceptives" just didn't work! :-)
Hmmmm marinated muffy.......nope !
This lady sells it and eats it ?!?!?!?
Yuck !
But then if folks watched half the fast food or resturant fare etc we eat they'd be reeeeeeeeal skinny !
Wonder if this lady barks ?
Kenyans dog food ping
If they don't accept it, we should .. don't you all know George Bush is going to need all that dog food so our Sr. citizens will have something to eat after he gets done privatizing SS?
/sarcasm
But some beggars can constantly be beggars.
If any of you ever hear that I am starving send me anything that is edible or potable.
