PROVIDENCE -- U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee announced this morning that he will vote against the nomination of Judge Samuel A. Alito Jr. to the Supreme Court.
In a statement issued at a press conference this morning, the Rhode Island Republican said he was "greatly concerned" about some of Alito's philosophies.
Chafee described himself as a "pro-choice, pro-Bill of Rights" Republican, in explaining his decision against Alito.

If anyone is upset about this... do something about it! Stop giving money to the RNC which funded attack adds against Chafee's primary opponent and donate to the Club For Growth, which is supporting Chafee's primary opponent:

Following NRSC Ads, GOP Primary Voters More Likely To Support Chafee Challenger
Washington, D.C. — Results from a poll by the Club for Growth, the nation’s leading free-market advocacy organization with over 33,000 members, show that a Rhode Island TV ad campaign by the National Republican Senatorial Committee designed to help liberal incumbent Senator Lincoln Chafee appears to be angering core Republican voters and driving up support for his Republican primary challenger, Cranston, Rhode Island, Mayor Stephen Laffey.
The poll of 300 Republican primary voters was conducted by National Research Inc. on Nov. 14-15. The poll asked whether respondents had seen television ads about Stephen Laffey. Among those who had, three out of four respondents said the ads either made them more likely to support Laffey or had no effect. Among those who reported that the ads affected their views, nearly three out of five of those (or 58%) respondents reported they were more likely to support Laffey.
“From bridges to nowhere to campaign ads that have the opposite of their intended effect, some Republicans in Washington are proving that they are simply no good at spending other people’s money effectively,” said Pat Toomey, President of the Club for Growth. “If the NRSC really wants to win the support of GOP members in Rhode Island, they should try encouraging Sen. Lincoln Chafee to vote for what the Republican party is supposed to stand for — a pro-growth agenda of limited government, lower taxes and less federal spending.” The poll produced the following results:

“Washington-based Republicans’ elevation of incumbency protection over principle is disgusting rank-and-file GOP members. Great numbers of them are hoping for leaders who advocate returning the party to the pro-growth agenda that helped it achieve a governing majority in the first place,” concluded Toomey. “While I’m sure Mayor Laffey actually appreciates the results of the NRSC’s ads against him, it’s a sad commentary on the state of the Republican party leadership in Washington.”

Gee, we better forget about supporting the pro-life, pro-family, anti-tax Norm Coleman too, right? Just forget about all the work he's done exposing U.N. corruption. He's from a "blue state" and therefore "unelectable". And there's plenty more where that came from, I suppose we should write off Pete Dominici and Gordon Smith too. And you must have LOVED the way the RINOs in Illinois GOP abadnoned conservative Senator Peter Fitzgerald and let Osama Obama pratically waltz into the Senate.
Yeah, brillant stragedy, let RATS win ANY office in ANY state that goes marginally Dem for President.
Unfortunately for you, the RATS have more brains than you and not only campaign for but ELECT hard-core socialists in "Bush states" (see 3 out of 4 Senators in the Dakotas, for starters. Not to mention Senators Reid, Bayd, Byrd, Rockefeller, Pryor, Lincoln, etc.) Since they actually put up an winning effort in enemy terrority and you don't BOTHER to even try, I guess it's time to hand over the reigns of power to them.
I have a better idea. Since the RATs manage to elect even LIBERAL candidates in "solid" Bush states, why don't we purge some of these RINOs and whole heartly support and fund REAL Republicans like John Spencer and Steve Laffey?

FYI, going by Alberta Child's "brillant plan" to contest ONLY "Bush state" senate races and pre-emptively surrender any senate seat in a Gore/Kerry state, here's how our 2006 campaign starts:
We toss all our "blue state" GOP senators (including the conservatives like Rick Santorum, as Alberta's Child already admitted) overboard and hand over the Senate to the Dems.
The Dems start with 56 seats and we get 44 (remember, we're AUTOMATICALLY giving away the open seats in New Jersey and Minnesota -- even though the GOP candidate is currently AHEAD in the polls there. But those are "blue states", so according to Alberta's child we write off Michael Stelle and tell Kwami Mfume he can run unopposed)
Unlike Alberta's Child, the Dems have balls and will continue to run communists nationwide defend their "red state" Senators tooth and nail like Robert Byrd, but we divert all money and resourses to ONLY the state's Bush won.
To keep our pathetic 44 seat total from going any lower, we get to spend lots of money defending "red state" RINO senate seats held by McCain, Warner, Hagel, Murcowski, etc., etc. We also now have the opportunity to throw lots of money at "red state" Dem seats in a quioxitc quest to "unseat" people like John Rockefeller and Kent Conrad. There's really only a handful of "red state" Dems we can try to unseat, unless Alberta's child wants to campaign against "blue state" Democrats (Cantwell, Lautenberg, etc.) and I imagine he doesn't since we already surrended all the existing GOP seats in those states.
We have to sweep SIX "red state" Dem seats JUST to break even with the rats (50-50 senate tie), so we'd have to defeat, for example, Baucus, Bayh, Byrd, Conrad, Landrieu, AND Harkin to get to the point where we'd gain control of the Senate thanks to a technicality where Cheney breaks the tie. I don't even think six "red state" Dems are up for re-election in 2006, so we're looking at 2008 at the earliest for GOP control (assuming we sweep both 2006 AND 2008 and defeat EVERY "red state" Dem)
Yeah, Alberta Child's plan to "write off" every blue state makes PERFECT sense, doesn't it?
