Now that Hamas has apparently won the Palestinian elections, the West is hoist with its own petard.
On the one hand, Hamas is a terrorist group that unabashedly targets Israeli civilians and calls for the elimination of the Jewish state. On the other hand, it just won what observers deem to have been a reasonably fair election, and so enjoys the legitimacy that comes from the ballot box. Every foreign ministry now confronts a dilemma: Nudge it to moderation or give up on it as irredeemably extremist? Meet with Hamas members or avoid them? Continue to donate to the Palestinian Authority or starve it of funds?
This double bind is of our own making because, with Washington in the lead, virtually every Western government adopted a two-prong approach to solving the problems of the Middle East.

Just because they were democratically elected does not mean we have to be all buddy-buddy with them....
The West Jordanians are crazy child murderers. Democracy has simply made their intentions clear.
The U.S. has stated, categorically, they do not deal with "Terrorist States" or States that sponsor terrorism..
It will be the responsibility of Hamas to end all terrorist activity and sponsorship of such before we will deal with them..
End of discussion..
It's not Islam or some cultural factor that accounts for this difference; rather, it is the fact that ideological enemies in the Middle East have not yet been defeated.
What he doesn't seem to get is that Islam IS the "ideological enemy." No Islamic society can really maintain democracy, in any case, because Islam is also a political system, a theocracy, and true Islam is seen in places like Iran and Afghanistan under the Taliban.
I don't think "democracy" is going to be a big problem for very long in the places that have recently elected Islamist governments, because now that the Islamists have been elected, "democracy" will quietly go away and we will be left with exactly the same situation we had before - violent authoritarian states with an expansionist mentality.

Isn't the appropriate response (though maybe it is also good to delay making this response) to declare war on them? Let's just take the gloves off and roll them up, as soon as we have some sense that international politics wouldn't make that impossible.
What am I missing here?
So now we know that the Palestinians really do want all the Jews killed. Who'd have thought it?
