Can you believe Jeff Kropf said he is going to support Saxon? One of the reasons he gave was Saxon was the only one who personally asked for it.

While some detractors have scoffed at Atkinson's youth, at 35 he has eight years of experience in the state Legislature, having grown up in a family steeped in both politics and media. That combination of youth, experience and media savvy just might be the formula

I recall when Dan Quayle was crapped on by a fellow senator (name does not deserve the bandwidth) in a veep debate - this is eerily similar.

OR Governor's race *ping*

I thought Mannix was the front-runner, as he only barely lost to Kulongoski in '02. I never heard claims that Mannix was a RINO until this thread, he was formerly a DINO who was too Conservative for the 'Rats.

Democrat Ted Kulongoski has made a mess of Oregon's economy, and he's a knee-jerk liberal. At a funeral for an Oregonian solder killed in Iraq, he took the microphone and used the tragedy to make a political statement against the war. This was a shock to the parents and the boy's friends who felt it belittled his sacrifice for his country.

That's where I live, and I'm going to volunteer everything I can to get him elected.

Mannix is pro-life, but he's very anti-gun.

His Dad, Perry, runs and owns the local Christian radio stationand was the head of the GOP when he was forced out by the "mainstream" pubbies.

Jason is good people...

He sounds good... How's Mannix? Is there anything wrong with him, or is he just not as willing to press controversial issues?

Do you think Atkinson could be the Dino Rossi of Oregon?

Rossi is a multi-millionaire who self-financed his campaign. His strategy of uniting suburbanites, east-of-the-Cascades residents, and conservative Democrats (ie the blue collar Dems in Pierce and Thurston counties in the case of Rossi) could work for Atkinson.

Wasn't former RAT Governor Kitzhaber (sp?) thinking of running? It sounded like he'd be harder to beat than Kulongoski.

I thought Mannix was acceptably conservative for a socially liberal state like Oregon. Sounds to me like Atkinson should wait for another race to come up.

It's a shame that DeFazio's 4th CD includes only part of Josephine County but not Grants Pass, so Atkinson lives just outside the CD 9 (and currently represents few of its voters). President Bush got 49% in DeFazio's mostly blue-collar district in both 2000 and 2004, and a pro-life religious conservative such as Atkinson could send DeFazio packing once and for all.

Jason Atkinson would obviously do a good job as Governor. But what makes anyone think he'd be a stronger candidate than Kevin Mannix, who very nearly won in the last election? While it's true that Mannix has lost three statewide elections in the past, the margin was always close. But contrast, Atkinson is little-known.

I totally agree. Atkinson needs to amp up his campaign though, because Saxton is getting way more press.
