Senator Joseph Biden (D-DE) failed today to address rumors that Nevada Senator Harry Reid will step down next month as Senate Minority Leader.
Reid has been stung by revelations that his political action committee (PAC) accepted more than $60,000 in contributions from Indian tribes linked to convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff.
Appearing on CNN's Late Edition, Biden avoided discussing either the Reid situation or any upcoming changes in Senate Democratic leadership.
Reid is no stranger to scandal, having been the subject of a 1979 Justice Department probe into allegations that Reid then Nevada Gaming Commission chairman had received bribes through mob lawyer Oscar Goodman and Tropicana attorney Jay H. Brown.
The probe officially cleared Reid, but he subsequently received numerous contributions from gambling industry figures, including Brown.
Some Democrats are worried that Reid's continued presence in the Senate leadership undermines Democratic hopes of scoring significant gains this November.
"Reid is going around the country talking about a 'Republican scandal' about Republicans accepting one- and two-thousand dollar contributions from Jack Abramoff, when his own PAC took in $60,000," ...
Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean, appearing on Fox News Sunday, made no announcements concerning Reid's status, but did comment on the growing controversy.
Moderator Chris Wallace asked Dean, "if we find that there were some Democrats who wrote letters on behalf of some of the Indian tribes that Abramoff represented, then what do you say, sir?"
Without mentioning Reid by name, Dean replied, "That's a big problem. And those Democrats are in trouble. And they should be in trouble."

Just let me relish that phrase for a moment................
Okay, now I'll read the article..................
Look at it this way. It's not like he can much more camera time than he's getting already.
Every word is to be calculated and parsed when these traitors speak.
I'm sure they started to, but that missing blonde girl story was so much more important.
What was that about corruption Pelosi was talking about?
Turbin Durbin.
I agree that he would likely just step down as a leader.
But hoping for more.
I think the Dems would like to go with one from a red state.
I'll bet it would be one of the following:
1) Schumer
2) Dorgan
3) Durbin
4) Bayh
Isn't Bayh thinking about making a run in 2008?
I often hear left commentators talking about how "delicious" this scandal is. They assume that just because $$ is involved, the Repubs (the party of "greed") is behind it. The truth is that when it comes to $$ scandals, you can be sure that Dems are in it up to their necks. Watch how the scandal will disappear off the front pages once some Dems tagged.
We don't really like our senate leadership either, but for a whole different reason. I guess we win on this front.
Missing blonde?
What rumors that Reid will step down as Minority Leader? I mean, other than the rumor that redstate.com started? Link? Source? Or just sensationalism?
Don't get me wrong; I'd love to see it. But this seems to have been invented out of thin air.
You know, the latest one, or the one before that other one, the one before that wasn't blonde, but she was white and pretty, so she had to do since there wasn't a blonde available, then there was the missing blonde before that..........
Can't get enough of those missing blonde stories;-)
Gawd, I love this. Please may it be true~!
Oh, THAT one!
I know exactly what you mean.
I don't believe Harry will meekly 'step down'.
Democrats, especially Senators don't do that. They only give up positions when dragged off in handcuffs.
Although if he becomes enough of a liability to the party in general, Hillary may arrange for him to visit Ft. Marcy Park.
