ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The lifeguards find bare breasts distracting.
It's News that Dares to be News! Click here for more Bizarre Bazaar. That's one of the reasons officials at the Ann Arbor, Michigan, Y-M-C-A say they've banned breast-feeding at the pool. But nursing moms counter that's no excuse. The breast-feeding mothers plan a nurse-in at the Y tomorrow to protest the ban. However, Krista Dragun, one of the protest organizers, says they'll be nursing their babies in the lobby, not the pool area.
She says they want the Y to adopt a more mother-baby friendly policy for the pool. Y officials note there's no eating or drinking allowed at the pool for anyone. But they add mothers are welcome to nurse their babies in other areas of the facility.
"The thought of a fat mother, sporting a soakin' wet bathing suit,whipping out her giant boob to feed (an adorable) baby, is disgusting."

This is a stoooopid rule. A towel over the shoulder, and the whole thing's invisible. And if the Y can't hire lifeguards who can be trusted to watch the water, then I'd say the Y has more pressing problems than breast feeding.

I wonder why it's okay to breastfeed babies in other areas of the facility, just not the pool? Seems stupid to me. But, they can make the rules as they want to. I won't deny that.

Lifeguards are responsible for what folks are doing around the pool as well as in the pool. That's why they are always looking around for children running or horsing around. They are the ones who have to enforce all the rules. If the lifeguards find breastfeeding moms distracting, then the moms must go. Just like disruptive children must go. The swimming pool is for swimming. If moms want to nurse by the pool, then they'll have to get their own pool. Or maybe they will persuade the folks running the Ann Arbor YMCA to fire the distracted lifeguards and allow the moms to nurse by the pool. I don't understand why they can't leave the pool area for ten minutes to take care of business. If they have other children at the pool, then they can take their children with them. Or they can plan on feeding baby before they go swimming and again two or so hours later. Do they not leave the pool for their other children to potty???
Because they were raised in the "it's all about me!" generation. Nothing much matters to them except what they want. That's what you get when you raise your kids to have "self-esteem" without first teaching them about self-respect.
Their wishes trump everybody elses' sensibilities. They can be offended by anything they like, and they expect the world to adjust to their wishes, but if anybody takes offense at something they want to do, that person is condemned as a troglodyte.

I am a very active freelance photographer. I do a lot of events and am always uncomfortable when a Mom whips out one of the things and begins to feed the baby while I'm shooting around her. One part of being a good shooter is being aware of what's around you and what effect the background will have on your picture. It's easy enough to keep them out of my shots, but I am constantly having to look around to see what's going to be in the next shot. Frequently I've had the feeling the Mom(s) thought I was stealing furtive glances at their boobs.
I remember a bit in the Life in the United States section of Reader's Digest at least 40 years ago where a young dad was taking a test in med school and was asked to cite at least four reasons that breast mil was better than bottle feeding. He got the first three, but was stumped on the fourth and ended up saying "because it comes in such an attractive package."
I do a lot of photographs of newborn babies and their moms. There are a couple of standard shots that are always good and mom feeding the baby is high on the list. It's a bit more problematical when she's breast feeding, but a lot of moms have no problem at all with pictures of her baby at her breast.

Correct. It is perfectly acceptable for a human female who happens to be healthy and beautiful to bear her breast and feed her equally healthy child.
It is NOT OK for some fat woman, (being fat is unhealthy and unattractive) to do the same.
If the fat woman doesn't want criticism, she needs to lose some weight.
Simple...ban eating around the pool.
