On yesterday's Today show, Howard Dean did his best angry imitation of Bill Clinton's "I did not have sex" and/or Rafael Palmeiro's "I have never used steroids, period" performances.
His voice rising, Dean insisted, over Katie Couric's attempts to claim otherwise, that: "Katie, not one dime of Jack Abramoff money ever went to any Democrat. Not one dime."
Faced with such intransigence, Katie politely observed that "we'll have to look into that and clarify that for our viewers." That's apparently just what the Today researchers did overnight, and Matt Lauer, with Tim Russert in tow, informed viewers this morning of their findings.
Said Lauer: "We went to the Center for Responsive Politics and technically Howard Dean may be correct but while 66% of the money in this situation went to Republicans, 34% of the money not from Abramoff but from associates and clients went to Democrats."
Lauer asked Russert whether Dems can turn this into strictly a Republican scandal and "wash their hands of this?"
Russert's response was unequivocal, and not good news for the DNC: "No. The issue is broad and wide."
The old adage says not to pick a fight with people who buy their ink by the barrel. The same might be said, Howard, of top-rated TV shows who count their viewers in the 5+ millions.
Go Dean!
Today Show/NewsBusters Dean ding-dong.
It was a reasonably safe bet that K.C. and her band of sunshine would fold.
But it didn't happen - kudos to Today Show people for serving their viewers, for once.
Did I really say that?
When I heard the soundbite yesterday on Rush, I knew right away what Dean was trying to pull off. No kudos for the perky one for not seeing through that one and calling him on it.
Is Katie perhaps laying the groundwork for Feingold?
"When I heard the soundbite yesterday on Rush, I knew right away what Dean was trying to pull off. No kudos for the perky one for not seeing through that one and calling him on it."
Great reply! If the perkster had actually tried to call him on his great misrepresentation, she would have interrupted, again, and again, and not let him get away with it. As it was, she basically let him slide through without much effort.
Dean lied. He played on his fears.
... or Virginia Gov. Mark Warner.
I'm surprised that the Today show went to such efforts. I hope that, if others mimic Dean's claim of this being just a Republican issue, they continue to bring up the truth.
But to have them bring this back up the following day. Nice.. I hope Dean was watching...
Dean will be on with Chris Wallace on Foxnews Sunday this Sunday. We'll see if the hard-hitting questions are posed then. Should be interesting.
Wow - fact checking on the Today show! Who knew they had it in them? Hope springs eternal.

I was very surprised to hear Katie yesterday, because she did not toe the party line. She was not as easy on Dean as i excected. Amazed at this followup, too.
"Lies! Lies! They're all lies, I tell you! If hadn't been for those damn stains on the dress and that damned positive test for steroids, we'd be telling the truth!", said Bubba and Raffy.
Is there any screen captures of the search for her brains- I mean her colonoscopy?
How many times do I have to say it -- FOLLOW THE MONEY! The MSM is losing money, ratings are at an all time low, and more people are tuning in FOX than ever. We are seein a shift from the far left to more moderate views by CNN, and NBC. Watch out folks for wolfs in sheep's clothing
