Larger Photos of Gov. May Keep MVD Patrons Company (NM: Richardson)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | January 26, 2006 | Jeff Jones

You might soon be seeing more of Gov. Bill Richardson, at least in the offices of the state Motor Vehicle Division.

A division worker fired off a fax this week to MVD field offices statewide that reads like an urgent command to get [Richardson] portraits on state office walls.

"ATTN: ALL OFFICE MANAGERS— ALL OFFICES THAT DO NOT HAVE THE PICTURE OF THE GOVERNOR UP IN THE OFFICE WILL NEED TO CONTACT GLORIA GARCIA IN THE DIRECTOR'S OFFICE RIGHT AWAY," the faxed memo says.

The memo went to managers of all 70-plus government-operated MVD field offices in New Mexico. But MVD spokeswoman Brenda Riggs-Montoya said Wednesday the field offices are not being ordered to post Richardson's picture and chalked the memo up to a misunderstanding. "It's not mandatory we hang his picture on the wall," Riggs-Montoya said. "This went out as more of a directive. It wasn't meant to go out that way."

While photographs of sitting governors have been a common sight in state agencies for many years, Richardson spokesman Pahl Shipley said there's no gubernatorial edict demanding it. "Nothing like that came out of this office," Shipley said.

It's simply that some MVD offices have been requesting larger photos of Richardson than the standard 8-inch by 10-inch portraits, Riggs-Montoya said. The actual intent behind the MVD memo was just to let offices know where they could request a photo— large or small— if they wanted one, she said.

The memo was sent by MVD agent Marlene Perea and directs office managers without Richardson photos on their walls to contact administrator Gloria Garcia.

The larger portraits of Richardson are 17 inches by 22 inches. State prisoners mat and frame them, and state agencies can purchase them from the state Corrections Department for $25 a pop.

Does the pic showing him groping his Lt. Governor or 'interviewing' Monica Lewinsky for a job?

Don't know...probably in a fetal position today.

I believe that today is the anniversary of Slick Willie's 1998 statement that he did not have sexual relations with that woman.

Last November, when I needed to get my DL renewed, I got there at 7:30 a.m. and was first in line. They open the office right on time (actually a few minutes early). But I didn't get my license until 9:30 because the "computers were down". Talking with the staff, they said it was not unusual for that to happen.

Those photos plus names on road signs, buildings, etc. should be charged against the campaign funds of the incumbent. And that goes for Republicans too. Why, we could halve the national debt off Sheets Byrd alone!

What political genius actually thinks it's a good idea to put the gov's picture in any MVD office?

With the possible exception of paying taxes, I can't think of any state govt activity more likely to PO the average New Mexican than a visit to an MVD office.

Don't know, does she still have one of those cushy jobs she held in exchange for false testimony?

I always ignore this BS. I get paid to take care of bigger and better things, not to follow every petty whim of a tin-plated dictator with delusions of grandeur.

All road projects now have signs saying, "Another GRIP Project".
And what does GRIP stand for?

"GOVERNOR RICHARDSON's Investment Partnership"!

Naming construction and other projects after himself, simply pathetic...
Talk about Big Brother!!!

The article went on to interview some people seated and waiting for their number to come up and they same thing. They don't care whether the Gov's picture is on the wall; they just want to be served and get out of there.

(BTW, NM has a service called Motor Vehicle Express which for an extra $15 will get you in and out in 15 minutes or less. It's run by a private contractor who won the bid for the service. Otherwise you wait for ever, as I did.)
