SACRAMENTO -- California regulators became the first in the nation today to designate second-hand tobacco smoke as a "toxic air contaminant,'' placing it in the same category as the poisons arsenic and benzene.
The state Air Resources Board decided to target environmental tobacco smoke after evaluating studies that linked other people's smoke to increased cases of breast cancer, heart disease, asthma and low birth-weight babies.
The designation will trigger investigations around the state. Air board staffers are expected to visit clusters of smokers outside buildings and other spots where smokers congregate. They want to figure out ways to reduce the toxic exposure to unsuspecting passers-by.

Why does anyone want to live in California?
Jihad...
[Why does anyone want to live in California?]
In this case, why does any smoker want to live there?
I can think of 100 ways the liberals make California unliveable. In fact, I gave up huge salaries TWICE to get the heck out because of the liberals.
But I liked the fresh air in restaurants.
"Why does anyone want to live in California?"
For clean air? (heehee)
I'm wondering that myself. And I never thought I'd say it, because this is a BEAUTIFUL state.
Was.
Next they will be charging people with attempted murder for blowing smoke in someones face?
The hell of it is they're bailing out of Kalifornia and bringing their nutty ideas here to Arizona where the liberal left governator jumps on them like a bird on a junebug!
Can we stop holding our breath and put the gas masks away now that our air is pure...
The largest Second Hand Smoke studies have proven no scientific connection to any of the diseases listed.
in fact, more beneficial effects have been scientifically linked recently.
This is what you get with the dumbing down of science by the political class.
The World Health Organization commissioned a study in the '90s that was supposed to document the bad health affects of second hand smoke. It turned out that there were no verifiable negative health affects to non-smokers, so they buried the study, and legislate today as though it verified the evil was real.
These people are certifiable a-holes.
Well, you all need to build a fence!
I noticed the study on which this decision was based, was neither linked or named.
Ping-a-roonie!
I guess the folks in California have, at last, managed to put opinion ahead of science. While I have no problem with not smoking in public places such as restaurants, office buildings and the like, I am really annoyed that such opinions about second hand smoke can be stated as facts when there is no evidence to support them!
First, arm the smokers. Then, they can shoot the "inspectors". End of problem.
In before the ping. LOL.
It has been determined that second-hand violence from Hollywood movies causes severe behavior problems in adolescents. All movies should be taxed an extra $10 --- it's for the children, just trying to save lives and Bushfault.
