Today, President Bush welcomed Pakistan Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz to the Oval Office where the two discussed the relationship between the two countries, and made a joint statement to the press. Later in the day, President Bush welcomed 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart to the South Lawn of the White House where they posed for a photo op with the Nextel Cup Champion team (and the winning Chevrolet !) He also met with West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin in the Oval Office, whose legislative proposals to improve mine safety have passed by the West Virginia Senate unanimously.
Today, the Senate Committee voted along party lines to send the nomination of Judge Samuel Alito to the Senate floor for confirmation.

***I've always loved to read. I was the dorkiest kid :) Usually the only thing I got in trouble for was staying up late so I could finish reading a book. It was hard for my mom not to laugh at that. She didn't really want to punish me for reading.***
Ahhhhhh, reading in bed with a flashlight under the covers so Mom wouldn't notice. I had a conversation years ago with an editor about that very subject, and we both agreed that it was the most fun reading we ever did.

Yes, please, Mr. President! Please keep swaggering! And I also love 'the smirk'!
Sen. Reid is a doofus!

I got in trouble for the same thing -- flashlight under the bedcovers so I could read after Lights Out. All four of us kids got in trouble for that. One of our biggest difficulties was staying in batteries. It is funny, looking back on it. I still love to read just before falling asleep.

Sorry to hear that. I believe the parents never get over that also. Barbara had said she became gray overnight when little Robin died.

I don't think my Mom ever recovered from my sister's death........not really. (But they're together now. :)
Did you ever see the interview........I think it was Larry King.........when GHW and Barbara were reading from his book of letters about Robin. HE couldn't read it yet because it made him cry, but Barbara was able to.
Robin's death crushed them both.........and little Georgie too. I really think a lot of his personal compassion stems from his response to that tragedy.

The only bit of critisim I have for GHWB and Barbara is the way in wich George had to find out about Robin's death.
Now, granted, he was only 7 years old I believe, but still, I think they should've told him right off that Robin was termanally ill and explianed that she was on her way to Heaven to be with God.
I think even a 7 yr old boy would be able to understand a little more
But to leave him with the illusion that his sister would be coming back was not a very wise idea.
I cried when I read about when Barbara Bush came back home and she and GHWB wnet to George's school to pick him up, he thought he saw Robin in the car with them only to find out she had died.
I neede to get that out.
I thin W should've been told the truth about Robin's condition so he could have at least have said goodbye to her.

Times were different then, Pippin. Kids weren't told about death, divorce...... anything that might hurt them.
I'm sure that George H.W. and Barbara were doing what they thought best..........and what most other parents would have done at the time.

I agree Pippin but unfortunately we have seen in the latter part of the 20th century death brushed under the carpet and only spoken about in hushed voices. In particular when there are children around.
Prior to that especially with the high mortality rate with young children it was very much part of everyday life. Now everyone expects to have a perfect healthy child that will grow to old age rather than be grateful that your child is that healthy baby.
I can remember my grandmother (mum's mother) and my grandfather's (dad's father) illnesses and initially their death was hidden from me until they had to tell me. Also I was not allowed to go to the funeral. I have always regretted not being allowed to go to my granddad's as we were very close, he used to pick me up everyday from junior school for several years.
I think the tide is turning and children are now being told more and parents encouraged to allow them to go to grandparents and siblings funerals but I think when death became the preserve of old age in many people's mind that was the start of not talking about it.
The early part of the 20th century sex was not discussed but that now is open topic for all and death became the hidden subject in the latter part of the 20th century.
My thoughts for consideration.

Also I think in the case of the Bushes her book infers that she had a breakdown when Robin died and I am not even sure if she actually went to the funeral. If this is true she may have already had started to suffer before Robin died when it became clear there was going to be no happy ending.
In view of this it must have been even more difficult to try to cope with having to tell your oldest child that he little sister was gone for ever in this life.

That makes sense, I remember her saying her hair had gone totally white after Robin died.
I also remember her overhearing George tell his friend he couldn't go out to play as he had to keep his mom company.
That's when she realized this was affecting the rest of her family.
