Governor Perry visits Iraq
11:50 AM CST on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 Associated Press
Texas Governor Rick Perry has traveled to Iraq with three other governors in a surprise visit to troops from their states.
Perry joined Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle and Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal.
A Huckabee spokeswoman says the four all left for Iraq on Sunday after receiving classified briefings at the Pentagon.
Perry and Huckabee are Republicans. Doyle and Reudenthal are Democrats.
Huckabee spokeswoman Alice Stewart says the Pentagon arrange the trip to raise the governors' awareness of the global war on terror.
Texas officials were planning a briefing later in the day Tuesday.
A Perry spokeswoman says the trip couldn't be discussed earlier because of security reasons.
The governors' itinerary included a stop at Camp Arifjan in Kuwait and stops in parts of Iraq with briefings by the top U.S. commander in Iraq, General George Casey.
Uh -- visiting troops from Texas?
Maybe he's visiting Texas troops, but it seems like this would take a lot of unnesessary time and security.
Yeah, if that's such a huge issue for you, we should probably shut down the USO, right? After all, we have to provide expensive and "unnecessary" security for the celebrities who go out to support the troops. Surely we could save money by simply not entertaining the troops or boosting their morale.
You disgust me.
Your agenda is showing. You didn't even mention the other governors. And if you are really from Texas, why aren't you flying a Texas flag on your home page.
Was his hair coifed?
Sure makes sense, don't it?
Perry has been real attentive about seeing the troops off and being on hand to welcome them back.
Though the 56th Combat Brigade (Texas 36th Infantry Division) has just returned home, I believe there are still Texas National Guard troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan . . . plus those serving with the reserves and regular forces deployed from Texas.
Hope Perry does the full tour, though.
Toward the end of January we deployed elements of the 36th to both Kosovo and the Sinai. Bet the guys and gals in the Sinai especially would appreciate a little attention.
Hey, maybe the Gov will bring along some good down home Tex-Mex cooking!
The answer is: Governor Dave Freudenthal of the great state of Wyoming.
I even have a coin and a small state flag with his autograph to prove it."
We're originally from Wyoming, now we're brand new baby Texans. This was a real treat for him on both sides.

You say youre not from Texas Man as if I couldn't tell You think you pull your boots on right And wear your hat so well So pardon me my laughter Cause I sure do understand Even Moses got excited When he saw the promised land Chorus: Thats right youre not from Texas Thats right youre not from Texas Thats right youre not from Texas But Texas want you anyway Chorus See I was born and raised in Texas And it means so much to me Though my girl comes from down in Georgia We were up in Tennessee And as we were driving down the highway She asked me baby whats so great How come youre always going on About your Lone Star State I said thats right youre not from Texas Thats right youre not from Texas Thats right youre not from Texas But Texas want you anyway Chorus Oh the road it looked so lovely As she stood there on the side And she grew smaller in my mirror As I watched her wave goodbye Those boys from Carolina They sure enough could sing But when they came on down to Texas We all showed them how to swing Now Davids on the radio And old Champs still on the guitar And Uncle Walt hes home with Heidi Hiding in her loving arms Chorus Chorus Theyre OK in Oklahoma Up in Arkansas theyre fair But those old folks in Missouri They dont even know youre there But at a dance hall down in Texas Thats the finest place to be The women they all look beautiful And their men will buy your beer for free And theyll say thats right youre not from Texas Thats right youre not from Texas Thats right youre not from Texas But Texas want you anyway Chorus So wont you let me help you Mister Just pull your hat down the way I do And buy your pants just a little longer And next time somebody laughs at you You just tell em youre not from Texas Thats right youre not from Texas Thats right youre not from Texas But Texas want you anyway Chorus |

Sounds like a good idea. Good way to support the troops, Govenors...
Don't forget about troops from Ft. Bliss
Soldiers of the 36th Infantry Division's 56th Brigade Combat Team train on Fort Hood, Texas, for their upcoming deployment to Iraq.
By Master Sgt. Lek Mateo /56th Brigade Combat Team Public Affairs Office
FORT HOOD, Texas, Oct. 22, 2004 For any athletes, constant practice and teamwork can make the difference between winning and losing a big game. But for the soldiers of the 36th Infantry Division's 56th Brigade Combat Team, the intense combat training that they are performing here in preparation for their deployment to Iraq is no game, because losing can mean the difference between life and death.[excerpt]The call-up of about 3,000 Texas citizen-soldiers for duty in southwest Asia to support Operation Iraqi Freedom is the largest mobilization in the state's history since World War II.
After half a century, the 36th Infantry Division, formally the 49th Armored Division, was reactivated to help transform the Texas Army National Guard into a more mobile and lethal fighting force that will see ,b>a new generation of soldiers wearing the "T-Patch" committed to helping fight the global war on terrorism and carry on the proud legacy established by their predecessors.
And Perry is former military, btw... pilot.
I must admit, that until this year, Perry didn't do much for me, but I've come around on him, and I will gladly vote for his re-election.
