March for Life Rally Draws Thousands to D.C.

WASHINGTON — President Bush thanked abortion opponents Monday for helping to defend his "culture of life" agenda and for pursuing "a noble cause" that he hopes will persuade other Americans to the "rightness" of their effort.

"You believe, as I do, that every human life has value, that the strong have a duty to protect the weak, and that the self-evident truths of the Declaration of Independence apply to everyone, not just to those considered healthy or wanted or convenient," Bush said by telephone to demonstrators gathered in Downtown Washington before a march to Capitol Hill. "These principles call us to defend the sick and the dying, persons with disabilities and birth defects, all who are weak and vulnerable, especially unborn children."

Monday's rally marked Sunday's 33rd anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in 1973. The president did not call for an end to abortion rights, but identified with the aspirations of those who do.

"We're working to persuade more of our fellow Americans of the rightness of our cause. And this is a cause that appeals to the conscience of our citizens and is rooted in America's deepest principles," the president said from Manhattan, Kan., where he delivered a speech at Kansas State University. "And history tells us that with such a cause we will prevail."

God bless all who marched. May their victory be swift, and the babies saved, beautiful and strong!

Do you think democrats understand that the reason they can't win nationwide elections is because they killed all their potential voters when they were real young?

To his credit, President George W. Bush was the first to address the annual march for life. President Reagan was certainly pro-life, but he stayed away from this event--as, indeed, did most of the Catholic bishops and priests of that time. The first marches were organized almost entirely by lay volunteers.

Fox is breaking the media embargo by reporting on this.

My clear recollection is President Reagan was the first to address the March for Life. As with President Bush, he did so by telephone link.

It really turned my stomach to see protesters against Alito and the right to lifers from a local Christian college (Hope) in our local paper today.

I don't have the links, but I HAVE seen an analysis making a good case that Gore or Kerry might have won if more Democratic families had not aborted their young.

This also reminds me of the birth dearth in Western Europe, at least among the native Europeans. No doubt abortion is at least somewhat a factor there as well.

I don't think we can assume that all 46 million aborted babies would have grown up to be DemocRATS. What we can assume though is because we have killed these unborn children, our Social Security program is in deep trouble. There are not enough workers to take care of all the baby boomers. Maybe that is a fit punishment for a society that kills its young.

Not sure about a transcript, but the rally is on C-Span right now.

The incredible patience and dedication of the people who knew at the beginning what a great wrong this was and those who they have educated and persuaded through the years have my undying admiration and thanks.

I don't believe all 46 million would be democrats, but most conservatives don't abort so they more likely would have been raised with liberals running the family (if you could call it a family).

I highly respect Charles Krauthammer on many levels...

..but I think he is not prolife...

..and today on Brit Hume's panel, he alluded to the huge crowd of prolifers as 'resorting to 3rd world tactics' to achieve their purposes....(paraphrase)

I would like to believe I misheard or misunderstood....truly I would.

Unfortunately I'm at the office and could not get away today - has there been an "embargo" by the media in reporting President Bush's address OR the entire rally in DC?

Our Parish's teen club and quite a few families attended.

I was referring to the fact that the major media have virtually ignored this event since it started. They never publish a picture showing the extent of it, and the little squib they run in the back pages usually undercounts it by a factor of ten. Typical treatment is to give equal time to the pro-lifers, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, and the pro-aborts, numbering maybe 20. But the pictures would be carefully angled to make them look equal.

Also, they have not usually reported the fact that President Bush has addressed the crowds.

Ronald Reagan actually wrote a book attacking abortion. The media never mentioned it once, and naturally it never appeared on any of the best seller lists, even though I believe large numbers of copies were sold.

I've only been able to get to one of them, which was some years ago. We went down from Connecticut in a bus chartered by a group at our church. The bus parked in the football stadium parking lot, which looked to me as if it was entirely filled with busses. A large part of the Mall was filled with pro-lifers.
