Joe Lieberman: U.S. Prepared for Iran Strike

Sen. Joe Lieberman said Sunday that the U.S. is prepared to deal with the Iranian nuclear crisis militarily - even if the war in Iraq continues to require a substantial American troop commitment.

"We have the most powerful military in the history of the world," Lieberman told CBS's "Face the Nation."

"We are capable, if necessary, of continuing to pursue our aims militarily in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere and, if necessary, conduct a military attack on Iran."

Lieberman said the he hoped an attack on Iran, if it should come, would be carried out "with the assistance of our coalition allies in Europe."

But he noted that any assault on Iranian nuclear facilities "would be primarily an air attack. It's not going to involve massive use of ground forces."

Asked about reports that the U.S. would let Israel take the lead in any attack against Iran, the Connecticut Democrat told CBS:

"The United States is a strong enough country that we never want to be in a position to have to essentially contract out protection of our national security, vis-a-vis Iran, to another country like Israel."

He noted also the Israelis "don't have the same aircraft capacity that we do, capable of doing it."

Lieberman said that while the military option remains a last resort for the U.S., "I want the people who lead Iran to understand that it is on the table. We deem their pursuit of nuclear weapons to be dead serious."

Um, what about 100,000 Iranian and Syrian infantry swarming across into Iraq, Joe?

Sounds like a target rich environment to me.

Yeah, I've often heard that the Iranian people, despite their government, are the most pro-American in the Middle East. I even heard there was a candle-vigil after 9/11.

The point being, no amount of destruction will stop the Mullah's drive to create a doomsday device to "wipe Israel off the map."

But we can place them technologically back to the 7th Century. It's the direction they want civilization to return to anyway. Let's give it to 'em!

I wonder if the big operations to seal up the Iraqi borders in recent months has anything to do with this...?

The Iranians are very young, and very pro-American. It's a shame they can't overthrow these suicidal Mullahs.

That's the biggest advantage we have in dealing with Iran. It's an advantage that we don't have in North Korea.

Yes. But discounting that contingency is unstatesmanship.

I saw this program and I sure thought it was serious talk...not idle speculation. We rattling at Iran and Osama is rattling at us.

I would bet that if we OBL has anything big cocked in this country, a strike by us or Israel at Iran would be his go signal. That way he could hit us without a worldwide outpouring of sympathy for our side.

This is not to say that we should ever allow threats from OBL to alter our course.

The Mullahs are in total control, the young Iranians are caught in the middle, and this is a very bad scene, looks much worse than anything we have faced so far.

It would not be surprising IMO, if we see a tactical nuke deployed in a reomte location ofr Iran as a warning shot across the bow..

U.S. policy is to never introduce nuclear weapons into a conflict.

"Um, what about 100,000 Iranian and Syrian infantry swarming across into Iraq, Joe?"

That's what cluster bombs are for.

Well, knocking out Iraq will certainly have helped us in Iran, so it should work the other way too:)

"Let's say I want to stop someone from building cars, and they are building the car in many different locations. If I shut down the place where they are building the engine, they don't have a car. Or if I shut down the place where they make the brakes. Or if shut down the place they make the wheels."

Good point.

That's why the Geman ball bearing factories were bombed during WWII.

Good old Joe, maybe somebody asked him to say that?

That's what I'm sayin'. Lieberman isn't making a statement like that without the go ahead. Isn't he on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee?

If we don't do a very good job on all of Iran's capabilities, our troops in Iraq will be in grave danger

Iran will be warned that the initial strike is designed to deal with their nuclear threat only. Any other threat or action will be dealt with by a much more devastating attack designed to destroy the government and eliminate any further threat of any kind from that country.

We sure are rattling the saber with Iran. But do I need to remind folks that N. Korea has stated that they will hit us with Nuclear Warheads and also they have Nuclear warheads.

Also, they already hit us with a test shot. See warhead found in Alaska:

Are you sayimg we have nothing conventional in the inventory that cant do the job?

BS.

It aint nuclear and will not be.

Probably concrete and steel bombs. Bombs made of old ship and tank cannons.

You would not want to be on the receiving end.

Delivery requires bombers (B1/B2/B52) that the Europeons and
Israeli's dont have.

Border control is weak at best. Granted any large mobilization towards the border will be obvious with our eyes in the sky and dealt with accordingly. But border defenses are woefully inadequate to repel an Iranian invasion deep into Iraq, IMO. It would be a one way march to Allah though...

"...what about 100,000 Iranian and Syrian infantry swarming across into Iraq, Joe?"

They won't get through!

We have the strongest military in the world today, manned highly trained, dedicated professionals who will not allow themselves to be "swarned" by Syrians and Iranians.

Just be thankful they're not Mexicans, 'cause we can't seem to be able to stop Mexicans.
