MONTGOMERY - Keg parties at fraternities and many other places would be outlawed under a bill passed 30-0 Tuesday by the state Senate.
If the bill becomes law, people could drink draft beer only at a bar, restaurant, private club or other retail establishment licensed for beer sales by the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, said Sen. Bobby Singleton, D-Greensboro, the bill's sponsor. People could not buy a keg and take it elsewhere to drink.
Singleton said he proposed the bill in an effort to stop teenagers from drinking beer.
Donna Alexander, a lobbyist for the Alabama Wholesale Beer Association, said the association supports Singleton's efforts to pass the proposed law, because it could curb binge drinking and underage drinking.
Robert Hill, an attorney for the state ABC Board, said if the bill becomes law, "someone could not sell you a keg to take with you, to consume off the licensed premises that sold the beer." The board has not taken a position on the bill.
Asked if an organization could get a special-events license from the ABC Board as a way to hold a keg party if the bill were to become law, Hill noted that the state fee on such a license is $150, and said the beer would have to be sold at the event.

No revenue in that. Plus, it has been proven that it's much easier to control your own subjects......er population.
I sure remember the days when the ALL high schools, and some junior high, had smoking areas and every graduation party had beer bought legally by the graduates.
Never fear, they'll probably come to enjoy their helmets and bubble-wrap.
Make that adult baby-boomer. My generation is purposely engineering a collapse of our society through entitlements on one hand, and restrictions on enjoying life on the other.
Drinking age should be lowered to 19. That's partially the reason why college kids have these keg parties. They can get beer from anywhere and have friends who just turned 21 buy a bunch of beer cases at once. If the drinking age was lower, most of them would go out to bars and nightclubs and drink more responsibly.
Add "CONTROL", and you've got it.
But, they might smoke in there.

What a bad idea. Kinda a weird, a Dem is sponsoring it. Hmmmmmmm....... The whole 21 and up for alcohol is a bad idea. The age should be lowered. It will combat binge drinking. When I was in college, I went to frat parties, but they were rarely keg parties though. They served beer in the can form and plenty of them. The ground was littered with beer cans during frat parties.
This bill is ridiculous. I lived in Germany for 4 years. Kids can drink Beer and Wine at 16. There are fewer alcohol problems there among teens than in the USA.

Yep. The good old Americana days are over. I remember staying out in the streets from practically dusk until dawn, only coming home for lunch and dinner during the summer. Parents never panicked or issued an "Amber Alert."
Granted I don't know the legal drinking age in Alabama, but I bet it's already above "teenager". There are probably also laws on the books against selling, serving or otherwise providing alcohol to underage people.
I don't think I could drink enough draft beer to get drunk.
Oh, just give us Xers some time. We will elevate society to a new level of apathetic authoritarian statism. At least you guys had some cool protests. Our woodstock was sponsored by pepsi, and the one we sponsor in 10 years will probably be non-smoking.
More nanny government. They started out by pushing cigarette taxes through the roof "in an effort to stop teenagers from smoking." Sound familiar?

Did it reduce underage drinking? Not that anyone's noticed. They just drink out of a bottle or can now instead of a plastic cup.
It did stop adults from having a keg of beer at company barbecues and family reunions though. I'm sure the fools in the legislature got some satisfaction out of that.
Or maybe they have learned from the WOsD that there is a lot of money to be made in prohibition
Sliipery slope is where we were in the early 90s. We are in free-fall off the cliff now.
