Reporter's Eyewitness Account of Allen's Execution
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | January 17, 2006 | Kevin J. Fagan

Posted on 01/17/2006 9:28:37 AM PST by KingofZion

The oldest man to ever enter California's execution chamber met his doom Tuesday the way he'd wanted to: With the faint lilt of Native American chants ringing in the air around him, and loved ones mouthing "I love you" to him as his damaged vision slowly faded to black.

A symbolic Indian feather lay on quadruple murderer Clarence Ray Allen's chest for the entire 33-minute execution, rising and falling until the lethal poisons piped into his veins through intravenous tubes stopped his breathing and he at last lay completely still.

"Hoka Hey, (an Indian saying meaning) it's a good day to die," Allen, who turned 76 on Monday, wrote in his last statement.

Those whose lives he savaged by ordering up the shotgun deaths of their loved ones in Fresno in 1980 looked as if they couldn't have agreed more.

Patricia Pendergrass, whose 27-year-old brother Bryon Schletewitz died when Allen's hitman blasted him in the head, kept her hands clenched together and her lips pursed tightly from start to finish -- and then, as the official notice of his death was read off, she allowed herself the slightest hint of a smile. Five chairs to her right in the ring of witnesses sitting at a railing alongside the death chamber, prosecutor Ward Campbell lifted his chin as if in victory.

"Mr. Allen finally received the justice he deserved tonight," Campbell said a half-hour after the execution. "I was always confident this day would come. I am just very glad to have it finally be done."

Another weepy liberal anti-justice portrayal of a vicious murderer's final moments. He did get one thing right: It was a good day for Allen to die. As were any of the last 7665 while his case was on appeal.

..."Mr. Allen finally received the justice he deserved tonight,"...

How poetic and transcendent it must have been. I wonder how he murdered his victims? Did they get a feather and chanting too?

One of his "save the criminals" lawyers had the nerve to try to bring an appeal saying that 23 years on death row was cruel and unusual punishment.

Of course, the REASON he was on death row for 23 years was BEAUSE of appeals.

BTW, I think Kevin Fagan's writing constitutes cruel and unusual punishment.

And the people he killed have been in the black since he killed them. He should have been killed long ago and not allowed to live and enjoy his life with our tax dollars going to pay for his health care and food for these many years.

The problem is he did not die the same way he killed his victims. This is a disgrace he should have been axed not put to sleep.

"Hoka Hey"

They should hang that over the doorways of all death chambers.

As somewhat Tslagi myself, I really resent it when someone plays noble, oppressed, Native American, as an excuse for animal behavior.

gotta love the "Goldilocks defense"(a term coined by David Kopel used to describe the anti-gun crowd). IE: they're too young/they're too old.
with guns, it's they're too small and concealable/they're
too big and powerful. there's never any gun that's "just right" and there's never anyone who's evil enough to die for their crime.

I am sure some liar (lawyer) retired on this case.
Justice should be swift and sure.

I suggest before a convicted felon gets a free lawyer to muck up justice, the felon should have truth serum and the best types of lie detection.
This might clear up old cases and give a chance for the few innocents to be freed.

Geez, this guy is too old, teenagers are too young. For what age cold blooded murderer does the criminal-coddling left think the death penalty is just right?

Oh, right. I think I know the answer.

How can you write a story about an execution and not detail the condemned's last meal?

Then while in Folsom prison for that murder, Allen sent a hitman after Schletewitz and seven others who testified against him -- and when the killer finally caught up with his first mark as he closed out his shift at Fran's Market one night in 1980, Rocha and White had the awful luck of also being on shift.

For all those death penalty critics who say life in prison without the possibility of parole is punishment enough: if the death penalty had been in effect after Allen's first murder and taken place in a reasonable amount of time after conviction, three innocent people would be alive today.
