Several speakers at the only public hearing on a plan to remove grizzly bears from federal endangered species protection called for more hearings on the proposal. About 235 people gathered at Tuesday's hearing in Cody.
The hearing was preceded by an informal open house. Similar open houses were planned this week in Jackson, Bozeman, Mont., and Idaho Falls, Idaho.
But no more public hearings were planned.
"I am somewhat disappointed that after 30 years of working on the bear issue, and all the millions of man hours, we only have this one public hearing," said wildlife photographer Dewey Vanderhoff of Cody.
Sherry Sutherland of Belgrade, Mont., said she drove four hours to Cody because there would be no hearing in Bozeman. "That's a travesty of the public comment process," she said.
Chris Servheen, grizzly bear recovery coordinator for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, said the agency had funding only for one hearing about $1,500.
Speakers were limited to 3 minutes each at the public hearing. Servheen said the spoken comments carried the same weight as written comments and those unable to attend the Cody hearing could still comment by e-mail or letter.
Supporters of the plan to delist the bear cite yearly population increases of 4 percent to 7 percent as evidence the animal has made a strong comeback and that it can be appropriately managed by state agencies.
Some opponents argued that grizzlies should remain protected because they lack adequate territory for expansion, and that endangered species protection helps guarantees their habitat will be protected, as well.
Tim Treadwell and his girlfriend were eaten by a grizzly bear a year or so ago.

"...Katmai National Park & Preserve in Alaska. On the night of October 5th or early the morning of the 6th Treadwell apparently left his tent to confront a bear in their campsite. Treadwell, or Amie, had their video camera rolling, but with the lens cap on, this allowed only for an audio recording of what happened next. From descriptions of the audio tape we know he was attacked only a few feet from his tent and can be heard calling for Amie. She comes to his aid and can be heard hitting the bear with a frying pan. When that doesn't stop the attack, Treadwell can be heard telling her to run. We don't know if she did, but we do know that the bear attacked and killed her as well."
Very sad. Still, there's a very big difference between Disney's "Winnie the Pooh" and a 2,000 lb predator that thinks your might tastier than salmon.
I'm still not for sure on that one.

Agreed, that under normal circumstances Tim's story would only be mildly amusing (and yes, a little bit sad), and not side-splittingly funny. What makes the whole thing comical, is the way the left recognized, embraced, and ultimately deified Tim in the months before his death. Back then, he was the "Bear Whisperer," who turned his life around, and taught us that bears were really big furry friends, who enjoyed our company. He was on Letterman and Oprah with his book, and Leo Dicaprio established a website and foundation to celebrate his adventures and discoveries. It was sometime around this point that I added his name to my dead pool.
Unfortunately Bart the Bear neglected to eat Alec Baldwin.

I'll repeat my plan to have fun with the left:
-Equip an RV-type vehicle as a mobile animal hospital.
-Set traps to capture animals on the endangered species list.
-Release all males and non-pregnant females immediately.
-For pregnant females, abort their litters in the mobile animal hospital, then release them.
-Laugh as hard as you like when the left complains that this kills endangered species animals but human abortions only remove "tissue blobs".
I absolutely agree. Man, Treadwell was a KOOK.
