There is a movie opening nation-wide this Friday (Jan. 20) called "End of the Spear."
It is a Christian-oriented film that deals with missionaries who were martyred in the rainforest of Ecuador many years ago. We need to have a big opening weekend. This is a good opportunity to stick it to Hollywood.

I read "Through Gates of Splendor." I thought it was the Auca Indians who martyred the missionaries. The press releases for this movie mentions a tribe whose name I'm not familiar with.
I don't know anything about the name change. How was the book?
They were originally known as the Aucas. Now they go by the name Waodani. I plan to read the book. I saw the shortened version of the documentary Beyond the Gates of Splendor in church. I reviewed it in my Blog (shameless plug), but in a nutshell, it was awesome.
Our family is looking forward to a trip to Baywalk to see End of the Spear.
Hope you enjoy it. And I also hope it's warmer than the 48 degrees I registered in Boca Raton this morning. Yikes! Did all the snowbirds bring down their weather this year?!? Well, better the cold than their politics I suppose.
Thanks for the post. It's going to be a great film. Our family plans to see it at least once, and I believe we will also be going with a group from our church.
I hope it stays cool a little while longer. I'd like to get to use the fireplace once or twice!
How are things in Rat's Mouth? :-)
Thanks for the info about the change of the tribe name.
The book "Through Gates of Splendor" was written by Elisabeth Elliot, so it's not exclusively about Nate Saint (looks from the info on the movie that they focus in on Saint.) There have been several other books written about the missionaries (Jungle Pilot was about Saint) and about Dayuma (Auca's Downriver: Dayuma's Story.)
A friend of my parents was a missionary at Shell for years, knew all these missionaries, Rachel Saint and Dayuma, so we grew up hearing stories when she was home on furlough.
I'm looking forward to the movie.
I own and have read numerours times, the diaries of Jim Elliot.
I have met acquanitances of his when I attended a church in Clairmont, Ca.
Of all Christian men he has inspired me the most.
Hobby Lobby is including a small ad and link to the movie website in their weekly coupon/specials email.
*grin*
I love explaining that name to visitors. Some residents try to tell me "Oh no, that's not what they meant!". My response is to explain the history of the pirates who used to use Lake Boca Raton (within the inlet) as a hideaway and such relevant history. I means exactly what it sounds like. Heh, heh...
I love it all the same, though. : )
Actually, in my view, Boca's getting much better. We've finally got several fine Brasilian stores here including a new "Padaria" where I can buy fresh "Pao De Quiejo" (cheese bread) without having to cook it or wake up in Brasil. I'm a regular there now, I just got back a little while ago with some hot bread for the wife and kids. That's when I saw the temperature - Yikes!
Did you folks get the amazing winds yesterday? We hit the PBC Fair yesterday and the winds were amazing. Kept the temperature in the high 60's. Today should be better, but I'm going to plant myself in front of the TV and watch the rest of the playoffs today, so no matter.
GO DENVER!
Our pastor said that the Waodani were ashamed of their history and did not want to participate in telling the story. But when they were told that America was heading down the path that the Waodanis had walked, with violence and murder on the rise, they agreed to share their story in order to help us. That humbled me, brought tears to my eyes. Amazing Grace.
I've never tried Pao De Quiejo, but I love cheese bread. Sounds like a great way to start the day. I'm sure my husband will be watching the playoffs while we finish taking down the remnants of the Christmas decorations. I hate to sing O Easter Tree. :-)
Those rainforests used to be the Ecuadorian jungles.
Is this name change a case of PC run amok, or does global warming actually search high and low for jungular names to change?
It's 30F in Atlanta this morning with strong wind gusts. Somebody (probably Karl Rove has the GW machine) send some global warming this way!

Hollywood may hate it, but they won't ignore it.
