All of what follows is from a press release from Senate majority leader Frist’s office:
“With the continued uncertainty over whether the minority will keep to a timeframe of voting, up or down, on Judge Alito on Friday, January 20, Senator Frist today made the following announcements to his Senate Republican colleagues on an afternoon conference call:
· Whenever the Judiciary Committee reports out the Alito nomination, the full Senate will begin work on the nominee the next business day.
· If Democrats delay final action past January 20th, he will cancel the recess for the week of January 23rd which he had previously scheduled with the knowledge of Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).
· Until the Senate votes, up or down, on the Alito nomination, he will not act on any other legislative item.
Frist made the following statement regarding his decision:
"Nothing right now is more key than the Senate voting, up or down, on the nomination of Judge Alito. I will keep the Senate at work and focused on the Alito nomination until we are done. Judge Alito, his family and the American people deserve a prompt and fair up or down vote on the Senate floor. When it comes to any delay in Judge Alito’s nomination, a Justice delayed will not be a Justice denied."
Right - don't give them the opportunity to inlist the press to further destroy the reputation this fine man has built over the last 20 years.
They have made the entire Senate the laughing stock of the world long enough.

I think Frist may be serious. Specter probably read him the riot act after the Kennedy debacle on CAP.
I watched about 90% of the hearings and I have never seen Specter so pi**ed.
Specter didn't give an inch when he was closing the hearings and Leahy requested the week extension. An extension may happen but it will be in the form of a "hold" by a committee member and will reveal the Democrats for the lying pieces of crap they really are. But we already knew that.
Frist will blink. Frist and the Pubbies can blink faster that former Senator John Edwards.

The rats want to delay the full vote until after the SOTU, I'm sure. They don't want the Alito CONFIRMATION mentioned by Bush. That's what they'd LIKE to do, of course.
Let's see if Frist has a scrap of cojones left...not sure about it yet.

And if true, this could drive a wedge into the dems.
if the Judicial Committee posturers decide to delay on
their own, it screws up the vacation plans of floor dems,
some of whom (J.F'n.Kerry comes to mind) never miss an
opportunity to avoid work. They may object to Teddy's
Tantrums keeping everyone after school.
And yes, these dems could just recess anyway, and not
show up for votes. Perhap Frist has a Plan B for that.

Sounds like a little game of chicken between Frist and Reid is brewing. Sadly, history suggests that Frist will be the one to swerve first.
Look for McCain to blindside him again.
Olympia Snowe is opposed to delay or filibuster -- so is Graham and DeWine -- that coalition has broken down.
It sounds like he's daring Kennedy to filibuster.

The dems cannot recess. They can however not show up at which point the pubbies will have a vote to confirm. If the dems have someone, or a few, with an enormous bladder(s), they can have a real filibuster and the remaining dems can go on vacation--unless the constitutional option is invoked.

Tweak some Senate rules?

My guess is that even if we get to the point where
filibusters are restricted, "heritage" filibusters,
where the member speaks until exhausted, would still
be permitted. I'm not sure I have a problem with that.
So far, this looks like a brilliant move by Frist.
I'd like to think he has the gambit all worked out,
including Plan B and Plan C.
How about we make it this:
No Happy Hours for Kennedy until a vote
No Happy Meals for Kennedy until a vote.
No Happy Hookers for Kennedy until a vote!
I can hear Kennedy now, calling Frist and asking if they can vote on Sunday, right after Mass (Priest to the Swimmer: "Sorry, Teddy, no Holy wine for you until a vote!").
LOL...isn't it just like Congress...they come back from a month off for the holidays...
only to take a week off a week after they get back!!!
Frist needs to at the very least start making a senate schedule that is 5 days a week (full days)...the hearing on the NSA "scandal" is supposed to start the first of Feb...
They are still talking about Katrina...plus like you said, there is the Patriot Act...and illegal immigration that they are supposed to get to right away.
