EXCLUSIVE: Pakistani Military Sources Say Zawahiri May Be Dead

Jan. 13, 2006 — Today, according to Pakistani military sources, U.S. aircraft attacked a compound known to be frequented by high level al Qaeda operatives. Pakistani officials tell ABC News that al Qaeda leader Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden's top lieutenant, may have been among them.

U.S. intelligence for the last few days indicated that Zawahiri might be in the location or about to arrive, although there is still no confirmation from U.S. officials that he was among the victims.

Then again, maybe he's not. I hope he is, but time will tell. Meanwhile, if our military says that there were no overflights of that area and no record of bombs dropped, I'll believe them over 1000 Pakistanis. Whatever the circumstances, whatever the reasons.

There was a report on CNN this morning, for what that's worth, that the locals had spotted a drone in the area a couple of days before the strike. If that's true, I'd say that pretty much let the cat out of the bag.

Call me pigged headed but I'm not buying we missed him until we get word from the US government!

Wouldn't a strike of this importance have to be ok'ed? By whom? I mean I can't see a Major or AF Colonel or CIA field agent giving the go ahead on something this big. And if this went to the top for clearance...... what assurance's were given to those leaders by the CIA that Zawahiri was there....no way after the debacle on Iraqi WMD...would Cheney or Bush ...take the word of the CIA without HARD PROOF.
