January 13, 2006 -- WASHINGTON — Sen. Ted Kennedy's office yesterday defended his membership in an elitist, all-male club when he was at Harvard — insisting it had no bearing on his bid to portray Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito as linked to bigots. Some Republicans pointed out Kennedy's membership in the Owl Club, saying it makes him a hypocrite for trying to slam Alito for belonging to a group that opposed affirmative action for women and blacks when he was at Princeton.
Kennedy press secretary Laura Capps said the Owl Club "is a social club, and many senators on both sides of the aisle belong to fraternities and sororities."
Asked if Kennedy would also support all-male golf clubs if they serve as "social clubs," Capps replied, "He does not support all-male golf clubs."

"He does not support all-male golf clubs." Neither do I. The best nine-iron I ever saw was female.
I used to have a heck of a time quelling all that hanky-panky that went on between male and female gold clubs in that golf bag, though.

The Kennedy family had their winter home in Palm Beach, Florida. At one time, this area was notorious for restrictions on Jews and nonwhites in public accommodations and country clubs. It would not surprise me if the Kennedys maintained memberships in private clubs that restrict membership to non-Jewish whites.
